Scope and content
This fonds gathers numerous materials collected and produced by the colonist Zalman Broches. It contains research and lectures on the beginning of Jewish settlement in New England, documentation of the activities of Jewish merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries, reports on the philanthropic institutions in Boston, his correspondence with various institutions and personalities, reports concerning the Jewish community of Boston and various other American cities, publications concerning activities of Labor Unions at the start of the 20th century, protocols of teachers in Jewish schools, and many lists and bibliographies.
The fonds also includes copies of documents relating to Aaron Lopez, Abraham Touro, and Jacob Rodriguez Rivera. There can be found numerous letters sent and received by Aaron Lopez, typed inventories of his estate, trade agreements and court cases, and newspaper reports on his death and property. As to Abraham Touro, the fonds includes photographs of his portrait and personal documents and notes about Touro's family (18th - 19th century). In addition, the fonds includes photographs and photostats of letters sent by Jacob Rodriguez Rivera (1768-1773) from the John Carter Brown Library in Rhode Island, a photograph of a letter sent to him (1768), and typed copies of Rivera's last will and testaments.
Some of the materials in this fonds were collected during Broches' research, while another portion was collected within the framework of the archive he founded. The difference between the two categories is only sometimes distinguishable.

Archival history
Zalman Broches deposited his collection in the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People at the beginning of the 1950s on the advice of Yitzhak Ben-Zvi on behalf of the Yad Ben-Zvi, affiliated with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Another portion of his bequest was donated to the National Library of Israel in the late 1970s by his widow, Dr Anna Mintz, and is filed there under ARC. 4* 1636.
Administrative / Biographical history
Zalman Broches (Brachot) was born in 1886 in Chavusy in the Mogilev district of Belarus. He emigrated to Eretz, Israel, in 1907. Expelled by the Turkish authorities in 1914, he moved to Paris to continue his studies. When World War I broke out, he travelled to Argentina. There, together with Joseph Mendelson, he founded the Yiddish literary weekly "Der Yiddisher Colonist" (the Yiddish colonist) (1916-1917) in the Dominguez colony established by Baron de Hirsch. After a two-year stay in Argentina, he returned to Eretz, Israel, to fight in the ranks of the Hebrew Battalion (of the British Army). In the 1920s, he was again forced to leave Palestine and emigrated to the United States. He settled in Boston (Massachusetts) and engaged in researching the history of the local Jewish community and, in 1937, established the archives and historical society called The Jewish Historical Society in Massachusetts. During the 1950s, he paid several visits to Israel, and in 1974 he settled there permanently. He died in 1977 in Jerusalem.
