Archival history

After Stern's death, his family immigrated to Mandatory Palestine and took Moritz Stern's entire collection of documents with them. Dr. Josef Stern handed over his father's estate to the Jewish Historical General Archives in 1941. Moritz Stern's papers were deposited at the CAHJP in 1959.

Administrative / Biographical history

Moritz Stern was a German rabbi, historian, and librarian. He was born in 1864 in Steinbach, Hesse-Nassau, to Jacob and Rosalie Stern.
Early in childhood, Stern moved with his family to Berlin, where he attended the Joachimsthaler and Köllner Secondary School. Stern studied history from 1883 to 1890 and received his doctorate from the Humbolt University of Berlin in 1889. In addition, Stern was trained at the Orthodox Rabbinical Seminar in Berlin and taught at the religious school of the Adass Israel Community.
From 1891 to 1998, Stern served as rabbi in Kiela, and from 1998 to 1899, he was director of the Jewish Secondary School in Fuerth, Bavaria. In 1898, he married Sara Carlebach (1880-1928), daughter of Salomon Carlebach, rabbi of Lübeck. In 1900, Stern was nominated director of the Jewish boy's school in Berlin and, from 1905, served as director of the Jewish Community Library, which had opened in 1902. In 1920, Stern was appointed to the position of chief librarian, which he held until 1932. Under him, the Library developed into one of the most important institutions of its kind in Europe, gathering over 70,000 volumes. In addition to his other occupations, Stern also acted as curator of the art collection of the Berlin community from 1917 to 1930 and organised the Moses Mendelssohn bicentenary exhibition in 1929.
His research interests were mainly related to the history of the Jews in Germany. He mainly focused on anti-Judaism in the Middle Ages, the participation of the Jews in the Wars of Liberation of 1813-1815, and their struggle for civil equality in the first half of the 19th century. The history of the Jews in Italy also took up a significant part of his research work. Josef Stern, Moritz Stern's son, published a bibliography of his father's publications in German and Hebrew.
Moritz stern died in Berlin in 1939.
