Scope and content
This collection of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro predominantly comprises documents related to Brazil's Colonial and Imperial history. The range of topics is broad, as the archive is mainly composed of donations from different archives.
Some of these relate to the history of New Christians in Brazil and the Portuguese Empire in general, such as the following:
Lata 218, doc. 6410: contains information about Father Manuel da Nóbrega, whose suspicions of being a New Christian caused some scandal in Rio de Janeiro. Nóbrega became the vicar of the cathedral in Rio de Janeiro, a position whose access was forbidden to people with Jewish ancestry. This document refers to the resistance offered by an ecclesiastical administrator, Mateus da Costa Aborim, to allowing Manuel da Nobrega to become the priest of the church of Gaunabara. Lata 93, doc 1576 contains further information regarding this case, namely a royal order by King Filipe III of Portugal (1605-1665) on May 19, 1627, in response to an appeal by Father Nóbrega to ascertain that he had no Jewish ancestors. See Salvador (1969).
Lata 337, doc. 5, no. I, II and III: list of people from Brazil judged by the Inquisition in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Lata 90, doc. 8: list of people from Brazil condemned by the Inquisition of Lisbon from 1711 to 1761.
Lata 218, doc. 15, no. I and II: lists of "autos da fé" (acts of faith, i.e. public ceremonies where the Inquisition handed down the judgements) in 1642 and 1647.
Arq. 1, 3 and 19: copy of António José da Silva's trial, 1726-39.
Lata 125, liv. 2: António Vieira's writings on the New Christian question and the reform of the Inquisition's proceedings. This collection also includes numerous documents related to the trial of Father Vieira.

Archival history
The Documentos Textuais collection comprises documents from donations or transferences from various libraries, archives and institutes. Some of the most important libraries incorporated into this collection were the Teresa Cristina collection, donated by Emperor Pedro II (1825-1891), and the Senador Nabuco and Conselheiro Saraiva collections. Documentos Textuais also includes personal archives of writers, jurists, historians, political leaders and other important figures of the history of Brazil.
Administrative / Biographical history
The foundation of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro (IHGB) dates back to August 18, 1838, when Canon Januário da Cunha Barbosa and Marshal Raimundo José da Cunha Matos presented the project to found this institution at a session of the Sociedade Auxiliadora da Indústria Nacional (National Industry Aid Society). On September 28, 1838, the list of members of the future Institute was already complete, and the Board of the Institute was chosen on October 14. On the general assembly of October 21, 1838, Francisco Cordeiro da Silva Torres, president of the Sociedade Auxiliadora da Indústria Nacional, declared the IHGB founded and elected the Viscount of São Leopoldo as interim president. On December 1, 1838, the first session of the new Institute took place.
By then, a new phase began that aimed at the institutionalisation of the institution's government and choosing the headquarters according to the possibilities and growing necessities of the Institute. The first statutes were approved in 1838 and successively reformed in 1851, 1872, 1890, 1906, 1912, 1965, 1991, 1996 and 2003. The first premises of the IHGB were at the Sociedade Auxiliadora da Indústria Nacional. In 1840, it moved to the Paço da Cidade (City Hall). On October 21, 1913, the IHGB was installed in a building on the corner of Av. Augusto Severo and Av. Teixeira de Freitas. After this date, new premises were occupied and de-occupied. However, this place was where the current headquarters were finished and inaugurated in 1972.
