Scope and content
-
This collection comprises manuscripts from the house library of the Tarouca, a Portuguese noble house related to the highest political and diplomatic organisations. The collection covers various topics, particularly history, literature and genealogy. It also includes scattered documentation related to the Portuguese Inquisition and collections of diplomatic correspondence. Some materials contain relevant information regarding Portuguese New Christians and Sephardic Jews. The following are some examples:
A.T./L. 62: Collection of documents regarding the Inquisition in Portugal and the diligence of New Christians against its implementation. 17th century.
A.T./L. 90: Petition of New Christians for the reform of the Inquisition's proceedings, presented to Prince Regent Pedro II (regency: 1668-1683).
A.T./L. 164: Collection of letters from João Gomes da Silva, Count of Tarouca, during his diplomatic missions in the Hague, London and Vienna. It includes a letter to the Marquis of Alegrete on May 9, 1713, containing information on Izac Barbanelli's business partners in Lisbon. Barbanelli was a Sephardic merchant based in Amsterdam who had close ties with Portuguese merchants and the Portuguese Crown. In another letter to Alegrete on February 1, 1714, Tarouca referred to the economic impact of the persecution against New Christians in the Portuguese Empire on commerce.
