Scope and content
-
This fonds comprises documentation produced by the Inquisition of Logroño. The fonds is relatively small, containing only six "legajos" (boxes of documents) and twelve books that mainly refer to issues related to the economic management of the court.
Conversos accused of carrying out Jewish-related practices were among the main targets of this tribunal. Usually, the persecution against this group was particularly strong in the last decades of the 15th century, the first decades of the 16th century, and, later, in the first two decades of the 18th century.
PARES, the system of the Spanish Archives, provides researchers with a large amount of documentation already digitised and made available online.
In most cases, consultation of inquisitorial documents should be complemented with research on other district courts and the Consejo de Inquisicion (Inquisition Council) fonds, which contains documentation produced by the Suprema. This institution had jurisdiction over all inquisitorial courts in Spanish territories.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The Tribunal of the Inquisition of Logroño, a city located in the North of the Iberian Peninsula, was established in 1570. Before this date, this inquisitorial court had been active from Calahorra. Its area included the kingdom of Navarre, the county and fiefdom of Vizcaya, the provinces of Guipúzcoa and Álava, La Rioja and the territories of the Archdiocese of Burgos and the Diocese of Tarazona. Its jurisdiction included the areas near the Pyrenean region and the Basque and Cantabrian coasts. Therefore, the conditions were right for it to be particularly active in the persecution against Protestants from France and other European territories.
