Scope and content
The Relação da Bahia (Bahia Court of Appeal) fonds predominantly cotains judicial processes and related information produced by the Court of Appeal of Bahia during the Colonial period. Salvador was the capital of the Portuguese Colonial administration in Brazil until 1763 when Rio de Janeiro took that role. Until this date, the Relação (Court of Appeal) was among the most relevant institutions of government functioning in this city.
The fonds comprises diverse document types, as the court was called to solve different disputes. They ranged from issues related to the Colony of Sacramento and its dispute with the Spanish, the Bahia Mint, and relations with ecclesiastic agents, among other topics. The fonds includes, for instance, charters, letters, orders, provisions, notices, ordinances, letters of administrative and military appointments, and information on salaries, fees, wages, bounties, and tenements.
Some of the documentation relates to New Christians in Bahia and its participation in different dimensions of Colonial Brazil. Such references can certainly be found not only in references to the legitimacy of their presence and the types of obligations and restrictions imposed on them but also on issues related to the Dutch presence in Brazil and the alleged collaboration of New Christians. References to New Christians can also be found in the documentation related to trade and commerce.

Administrative / Biographical history
The September 25, 1587, regiment determined that the administration of justice in Brazil would be carried out in Salvador. It also determined the Relação da Bahia's field of action, the attributions of the governor-general in matters of justice, and the rights of the chancellor and the three judges who were part of this Court of Appeal. On March 7, 1609, a new regiment regulated its internal functioning system, determining that the governor-general would run this court. The jurisdiction of the court was reduced in 1751 with the creation of the Relação do Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro Court of Appeal).
The Relação da Bahia was extinguished on April 5, 1626, and re-established by the September 12, 1652 regiment.
