Scope and content
-
The Família Pires de Carvalho e Albuquerque collection comprises documentation related to this family of wealthy sugar traders and manufacturers, influential politicians and magistrates established in Bahia. The Pires de Carvalho e Albuquerque family originated from a combination of three families. The members of the Albuquerque family were New Christians with Jewish ancestry.
Some New Christians created wealth and acquired prestige in colonial societies through marriages with influential families. The history of this family provides an example of those success stories.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The union of the Pires, Carvalho and Albuquerque families began with Colonel José Pires de Carvalho (c.1664-1779), son of Colonel Domingos Pires de Carvalho (1639-1708), who left numerous descendants from his marriage to Teresa Cavalcanti de Albuquerque. His descendants included José Pires de Carvalho e Albuquerque (1701-1774), jurisconsult, "secretário geral de Estado e procurador da Fazenda Real" (Secretary of State and Attorney for the Royal Treasury); and his grandsons José Pires de Carvalho e Albuquerque (1756-?), intendant of the Navy and also "secretário geral de Estado e procurador da Fazenda Real", and Antônio Joaquim Pires de Carvalho e Albuquerque (1766-1813), militia colonel of the Torre de Garcia d'Ávila (Mata de São João, Bahia). Several descendants of this family kept important positions in Colonial, Imperial, and Republican Brazil.
