Synopsis
-
Brigantine: Charlotte. Captain: Nathaniel Hathaway. Destination: Paramaribo (Surinam). In Paramaribo, Hathaway should dispose of the cargo, "which consisting of choice and vendable goods I make not the least doubt, both from your knowledge of the trade and promising season of the year, but you'll have it in your power to render me an agreeable account sales of this consigment". The net proceeds should be remitted to Daniel Crommelin & Sons in bills of exchange for Lopez's account. "The first and second bills of the setts forward under cover of a few lines to those gentlemen, per first opportunity to Holland in two different bottoms; the third bill of the sett bring home with you". The remain of the proceeds of Lopez's effects should be exchanged for good molasses. If the price of the molasses will exceed the amount stipulated by Lopez, Hathaway should purchase about 100 botts Russia duck and the remainder in good bills. "I entrust your utmost attention to see that the drawers or endorsers of said bills are people of approved credit and reputation, there having been lately many that proved themselves otherways". In case of contrary winds prevent Hathaway from going to Surinam, Lopez recommends Hathaway to fall into any port he thinks more suitable to dispose of his goods, "taking care to enter a protest setting forth the reason that prevented your going to Surinam, that if any accident happens, I may have justice done me by the underwriters, vessell & cargo being under an insurance". Lopez expects that Hathaway return at time to load and reach Surinam again before Christmas.
