Synopsis

Brigantine: Leviathan. Captain: Thomas Lothrop. Destination: Coast of Africa (whaling voyage). Lothrop should proceed to Martha's Vineyard and there take the remainder of his whaling stores. Then, he should proceed to the Coast of Africa, "where doubt not but you'll stand a good chance to make up a successful cruise and obtain in the course of the Winter season a load of spermaceti oil, which soon as obtained, you are to make the best of your way home". If he finds a scarcity of whales on that coast, Lopez wants him to look for them "in any other part of the oceans". Lothrop's voyage should last 8 months from the time he leaves Martha's Vineyard. The brigantine Royal Charlotte, Cornelius Buttler master, is to proceed the same voyage and they should meet each other during the time Lothrop will be on the island of St. Thomas (one month or six weeks). Then, both vessels should carry on their cruise in company. If both succeed in the fishery, Captain Buttler is instructed to deliver Lothrop as much of what oil he obtained as to make up a full loading for the brigantine. In exchange, Lothrop should deliver Captain Buttler whatever head matter he obtained and make his way to London with a full cargo of oil. If it is not possible to obtain at least 70 tons of oil, Lothrop should return to Newport. The casks of oil and head matter should be marked with the respective letters of each brigantine. Lopez asks Lothrop to write to him from the coast of Africa or any other part of his trip. "Relying on your experience and knowledge of the fishery, am confident nothing on your side will be wanting to render this voyage successful, and that good harmony may subsist as well on board your brigantine as with Captain Buttler tripulation".
