Synopsis
-
David tells Aaron Lopez that he had engaged in a journey to Newburryport “on a speculation” related to molasses and is now ready to set out. As he will not be able to please Lopez’s orders, he left written directions with Josy and requested Mr Hastings to pay a little attention to see that he attends properly to the articles ordered for the return. However, David fears that he will not accomplish but a small part. Molasses are scarce and rising. Sugar bakers only expect to open their doors next week. Loaf sugar has been out for some time and it is not possible to get it for a good price. There is no mackarell at market. New England rum's prices are rising fast. David promises that he will deal with the contract with the owners of the Queen of Spain before departing. Prices of commodities: molasses, New England rum, salt rock, Cadiz (?) and Lisbon salt. David tells that all these articles are on the rise. He does not know of any vessels for Europe.
