Scope and content

The Alberto Lamego collection comprises manuscripts and printed materials related to legal, military, cartographic, literary, and political-administrative history, including 18th- and 19th-century documents, such as laws, edicts, proclamations, and Brazilian and Portuguese newspapers. Some documents concern the history of the Society of Jesus, territorial disputes between Spain and Portugal in South America, the Portuguese Royal Family, and documents about the city of Campos in Rio de Janeiro, among others. It includes attestations, "autodemarcações" (self-proclaimed demarcations), balance sheets, letters, certificates, circulars, contracts, declarations, notarial deeds and pamphlets. It also includes personal records, such as research notes, prayers, poetry, and other literary texts.
This collection includes several manuscripts of Father António Vieira's opinions, letters and treatises addressing the New Christian question and the Portuguese Inquisition's proceedings, such as the following:
AL-110-001: Dissertation on New Christians. 1643.
AL-135-001: Opinion addressed to King João IV of Portugal in 1644 supporting the acceptance of New Christian merchants due to their economic power and the financial needs of the Portuguese kingdom. Copy dating from 1675.
AL-110-003: Letter regarding Jews and the Holy Office. Circa 1680.
AL-135-004: Defense of Gonçalo Anes Bandarra's Quinto Império (Fifth Empire), presented before the Inquisition. Prior to 1697.
In addition to Father António Vieira's writings, this collection includes several other records regarding the New Christian question and purity of blood issues. Some examples are the following:
AL-013-004: Recommendation of an agent of the Duke of Bragança addressed to Pope Sixtus V regarding the appointment of Jerónimo Soares for the position of priest of the "Padroado" (Portuguese Overseas Patronage) and the opposition against it from the Bishop of Leiria due to Soares's New Christian ancestry. 1682.
AL-046-007: Opinion of Manuel Lopes de Oliveira, "desembargador" (appellate judge) of the Portuguese Crown, against the claim of silversmiths to ban from their brotherhood people with "defects of blood", i.e. New Christians. 1688.
AL-021-004: Report entitled "Do estado em que estão neste Reino de Portugal os Christãos novos da nação hebrea, denunciando o pouco rigor do Santo Ofício no julgamento dos cristãos novos" (Of the state of the New Christians of the Jewish nation in the Kingdom of Portugal, denouncing the lack of rigour of the Holy Office in judging New Christians), polemical writing against the Inquisition's proceedings against New Christians, written after 1732.

Archival history

The Alberto Lamego collection was acquired in 1935 by the São Paulo State Government and delivered to the University of São Paulo in the same year. Before that, the collection was held in Portugal, in the National Archive of Torre do Tombo. The collection was transferred to the Instituto de Estudos Brasileiros (Institute of Brazilian Studies) of the University of São Paulo in 1968.
The Portuguese Comissão Nacional para a Comemoração dos Descobrimentos Portugueses (National Commission for the Commemoration of the Portuguese Discoveries) through the "Projecto Reencontro" (Reunion Project) promoted the microfilming of the documents of this collection that were related to the history of Portugal.

Administrative / Biographical history

Alberto Frederico de Morais Lamego was a collector who attended the Faculdade de Direito de Recife (Recife Law School) for three years before moving to São Paulo, where he graduated in Legal and Social Sciences in 1892. He settled in Campos de Goitacazes in Rio de Janeiro, where he practised law and started a career as a public servant while collaborating with some newspapers.
He travelled to Europe in 1906, living for 14 years in France, Belgium and Portugal. Like many scholars of that time, he visited archives in Europe, producing copies of documents related to the history of Brazil. He also acquired noteworthy manuscripts and printed works at auctions and bookshops.
After returning to Brazil, he settled in the Goitacá Plain, publishing significant papers in history. He became a member of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Estudos Históricos (Portuguese Society of Historical Studies) and the Academia Fluminense de Letras (Fluminense Academy of Letters).
