Scope and content

The Pergaminhos Avulsos (Assorted parchments) collection comprises the oldest documentation of the Arquivo Histórico Municipal de Coimbra, dating back to the 13th century. One of its parchments provides information on the fate of the Jewish cemetery of Coimbra after the late 15th-century expulsion (PT/AHMC/PA/nº 112). On May 9, 1520, the municipality of Coimbra came to an agreement with Pedro Álvares de Figueiredo, an "escudeiro" (valet), on the ownership of a piece of land that had been the Jewish burial ground. The ground was located between the monastery of Santa Cruz and the door of the Castle. The "vereadores" (councillors) claimed that it belonged to the municipality, and Figueiredo alleged that he had acquired it from the royal officers after the end of the "judiarias" (Jewish quarters).

Archival history

This collection gathers the oldest documentation of the Arquivo Histórico Municipal de Coimbra. In the 19th century, the antiquarian and medievalist João Correia Aires de Campos (1818-1885) organised this group of parchments and composed an index with abstracts of their content, published in 1863 with the title "Index Cronológico dos Pergaminhos e Forais Existentes no Arquivo da Câmara Municipal de Coimbra". Aires de Campos sorted the parchments according to the date of the oldest act copied in the document instead of the copy's date. The oldest item in the collection is dated from 1266, although it is a copy inserted in a document from 1307. When a catalogue of the archive's manuscripts was composed in 1964 by José Branquinho de Carvalho and Armando Carneiro da Silva, Aires de Campos' organisation was kept. The current reference number of the collection documents follows this criterion. Some of them were transcribed and are available on the archive's website.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Arquivo Histórico Municipal de Coimbra was founded in 1927 to accommodate manuscripts previously stored in the Biblioteca Municipal (City Library). Most of this collection was composed of documentation from the municipality of Coimbra fonds. It also included other collections from counties that were extinct after administrative reforms in the 18th and 19th centuries and others that resulted from donations.
In 1977, the archive was transferred to the Torre de Almedina, a tower of the ancient city walls where the city council meetings had taken place from the 14th to the 19th centuries. However, the archive only opened to the public in 1989. In 2001, the archive was again transferred to a new building. At present, it is located in the Casa Municipal da Cultura de Coimbra, in Rua Pedro Monteiro, and it comprises about 4,000 volumes of documents (books, files, and boxes) from the 13th-century onwards.
