Scope and content

The Pergaminhos series is part of the Bacharéis da Sé de Évora's collection, and it contains documents related to their economic affairs, particularly their properties' management. As the Bacharéis owned several houses and "foros" (emphyteusis contracts) in the Jewish quarter, this collection is particularly rich in references to the Jewish community of Évora. Some examples are the following:
Perg. 94: "Aforamento" (emphyteusis contract) of two stores near the Porta de Alconchel to Salomão de Leiria and Samuel Savargo. April 15, 1382.
Perg. 131: Agreement related to a house with a barn that was "aforada" to Bento Alufo, a Jewish goldsmith, who did not pay the rent for three years. July 12, 1402.
Perg. 141: Agreement between the Bacharéis and Isac Vivas on two houses with barn and wine cellar in Rua da Sinagoga. April 5, 1404.
Perg. 174: Copy of a royal letter from 1414 in which Isaac Bensaúde was authorised to make any contracts with Christians. This letter was presented by Bensaúde when he took the "aforamento" of a store in Rua da Especiaria. July 12, 1419.
Perg. 194: Licence given to João Rodrigues from Monsaraz to sell a house in the square near the "judiaria" (Jewish quarter) to Judas Maçonte, a Jewish "jubeteiro" (jacket maker). December 23, 1432.
Perg. 226: Agreement between Estela, Isac Galite's widow, her sons Josefe Gualite and Abraão Galite, and the Bacharéis on a house adjacent to the backyard of the old synagogue. January 11, 1458.
Perg. 254: Licence to Jacob Massano to buy a house in the Jewish quarter that had been taken from another Jew, Moisés Benfara. November 2, 1477.
Perg. 256: Sale by public auction of a house in the Jewish quarter that had belonged to Moussem Vivas, who died in Santarém with many debts. Abraão Soamaria made the highest offer. April 29, 1478.
Perg. 284: "Aforamento" of a house in the Jewish quarter to Judas Caçam and his wife Tamar, under the condition of carrying out works in the building. May 26, 1495.

Archival history

The Pergaminhos is a series of the Bacharéis da Sé de Évora collection, which also includes a 116-page manuscript codex and 87 assorted records and codicils of the 17th-19th centuries, most of them about contentious matters. It is part of the original collection of the Arquivo da Sé de Évora. By the turn of the 17th to the 18th century, abstracts were composed and included at the top of each parchment.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Bacharéis (literally, bachelors) was a corporation of clerics at the Cathedral's service. This corporation had its own legal entity, and its members were allowed to acquire and sell assets and plead in the courts. It is unknown when the Bacharéis of Évora Cathedral were created, but the oldest record mentioning them dates back to 1295, and it is related to the purchase of a vineyard. In the 14th century, the economic and social importance of the Bacharéis increased and, since the 16th century, they received one of the Cathedral's prebends. The "Bacharéis" were 15 clerics whose primary duties were the service in the Cathedral's choir and the parochial office.
Most of the "Bacharéis"' assets resulted from donations. The majority of their rural properties were located in Évora's outskirts, in Montoito and Estremoz. After the 14th century, the Bacharéis increased the number of properties in Évora, particularly in the "judiaria" (Jewish quarter).
