Scope and content

This collection comprises documents from the 14th century to the 16th century gathered following their chronological scope. It includes royal letters, by-laws, legislation, and pleas, among other documents related to the municipality of Manteigas during the Medieval and Early Modern times. Among this documentation, there is a record from April 27, 1484 (PT/CMMTG/CMMTG/004/00006), which includes the copy of a sentence related to two Jews, Salomon Franam and Juça Franam, who had the contract of "sisa" (transfer tax) collection in Trancoso's "comarca" (district) in 1469. They were sanctioned after a complaint filed by residents of Alverca for abuses committed in the "sisa" collection. This sentence's copy was presented, on January 3, 1485, by the representative of the residents of Lajeosa, a village in Celorico da Beira's outskirts, who were then facing a similar situation.
A digital copy of the document and its handwritten transcription are available online:

Archival history

The documentary series gathered in this collection was always under the custody of the municipality of Manteigas. The documents were stored in the city council until the Arquivo Municipal (City Archive) opened in 2005. Then, all records were incorporated into the new archive. Only one document of this collection, the "foral" (city charter) of Manteigas, granted by King Manuel I in 1514, is conserved in the safe of the City Council treasury.

Administrative / Biographical history

The origins of Manteigas date back to the late 12th century. King Sancho I granted the village's first foral (city charter) between 1186 and 1188 (the document is missing), which was promulgated in 1514 by King Manuel I.
The oldest references to Manteigas are from the "inquirições" (inquiries) of King Afonso III in 1258 and report to taxes paid by the village residents.
Since its origins, sheep and goat farming has boosted Manteigas' economy. Since the 15th century, farmers had received royal privileges to develop this activity, namely to shepherd outside the village. After the 16th century, the production of wool reached increasing importance. In 1524, King Manuel I appointed a local inspector to supervise the woollen industry in Manteigas. In 1679, the first manufacturer in the village began working. In the 18th century, the manufacture of wool in Manteigas got a new boost after central policies stimulated the industrial development of the kingdom. However, the technical development and the transition from traditional methods to industrial production only occurred in the 19th century and early 20th century.
In spite of this economic growth, after the administrative reform in Portugal in 1896, the municipality of Manteigas was temporarily abolished and annexed to the city of Guarda. However, the municipality was restored on January 13, 1898.
After the 1960s and 1970s, Manteigas' woollen industry went into decline. By then, the village was also suffering the effects of the emigration of a significant part of its population. Since the last decades of the 20th century, the local economic tissue has changed with the growth of the tourism sector in the region, boosted by the "mountain tourism" to Serra da Estrela.
Some entrepreneurs have also tried to recover the woollen industry in the village and have developed small food industries, such as dairy products.
