Archival history
The parchments of Guimarães were acquired for the Museu Nacional da Arqueologia by José Leite de Vasconcelos (1858-1941), its founder and first director.
Administrative / Biographical history
The Museu Nacional de Arqueologia (MNA) was founded in December 1893, following a proposal by José Leite de Vasconcelos (1858-1941), the Portuguese linguist, philologist, ethnographer, and archaeologist who became its first director. Initially named "Museu da Etnologia" (Museum of Ethnology), Leite de Vasconcelos conceived it to become a "Museu do Homem Português" (Museum of the Portuguese Person), with the aim of promoting the history of the Portuguese people and territory.
Since 1895, the museum has published the "O Arqueólogo Português", a journal of reference in the field of archaeology in Portugal. In its first years, the museum was installed in the building of the Academia das Ciências de Lisboa (Lisbon Academy of Sciences). However, in the early 20th century, it was transferred to the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos (Jerónimos Monastery), where it remains today.
The museum's name changed to Museu Nacional de Arqueologia e Etnologia (National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology) in 1945, and Museu Nacional de Arqueologia Dr Leite de Vasconcelos, in tribute to its founder, in 1989. Currently, it is simply known as Museu Nacional de Arqueologia (MNA).
The Historical Archive of the MNA gathers several collections, including those of the archaeologist Estácio da Veiga (1828-1891), acquired from his widow in 1897, and Leite de Vasconcelos' personal collection bequeathed in his will in 1941. The collection grew over the decades through acquisitions and donations by individual and institutional archives.
