Scope and content

The collection of manuscripts of the Ordem dos Advogados library gathers documents of several types and provenances. The oldest document in this collection is related to the Jewish community of Pinhel (a village in the interior centre of Portugal). It is a 15th-century parchment with a contract of sale of assets and estate in the amount of 3,000 reais brancos (currency) by Álvaro Fernandes and his wife Catarina Afonso to a Jewish couple of Pinhel, Samuel Adoena (?) and Oracima (Almeida, August 20, 1477). A digital copy of this document is available on the Ordem dos Advogados website:

Archival history

The provenance of this collection is unknown, but it is likely that it was already part of the documentary collection transferred from the Biblioteca da Associação dos Advogados de Lisboa (Lisbon Lawyers Association Library) to the Biblioteca da Ordem dos Advogados. Probably, some items in this collection came from donations given by lawyers to the library.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Biblioteca da Ordem dos Advogados (Bar Association Library) was founded in 1842. António Joaquim da Silva Abranches, a full member of the Associação dos Advogados de Lisboa (Lisbon Association of Lawyers, the predecessor of the Ordem dos Advogados) had the initiative to constitute the "Bibliotheca do Advogado" (Lawyer's Library) to support the lawyers' study and research. Three years before, a decree allowed the Associação dos Advogados to select juridical works from the Depósito Geral das Livrarias das Extintas Corporações Religiosas (General Deposit of the Extinct Religious Corporations' Libraries). Therefore, at the moment of its foundation, the Bibliotheca do Advogado already gathered about one thousand volumes.
Over the years, the library was enriched with acquisitions and donations given by the association members. In 1926, when the Associação dos Advogados de Lisboa gave place to the Ordem dos Advogados, the library was composed of about 5,000 volumes. The general registration of all volumes was completed in 1935, and six years later, the library received its first regulation. In 1960, the library's facilities were expanded with a new room adjacent to the reading room. After 1992, the library was subject to a comprehensive renovation and modernisation by increasing and treating its documentary collection, hiring specialised technicians, and computerising its services.
At present, the Biblioteca da Ordem dos Advogados is comprised of around 40,000 books, 850 periodicals, and several databases, in addition to personal archives, an old book documentary fonds, and a collection of manuscripts.
