Scope and content

The Convento de São João Evangelista fonds comprises documentation produced by or related to the convent over its history. It includes records regarding the convent's assets, namely sale and leasing deeds of houses and lands. One of these records mentions Mousem Caldeirão, a Jew from Évora who had rented the "sisas" (tax) incomes in 1486. He owned a house on Rua da Judiaria in Évora that was adjacent to houses where two other Jews, Rabi Joseph and Mousse Galite, lived. The Count of Olivença bought this house on June 29, 1487 (liv. 1, peça 6).
We thank Pedro Pinto for bringing this document to our attention.

Archival history

The Convento de São João Baptista fonds was incorporated in the Biblioteca Pública de Évora collection after its extinction in 1834.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Convent of São João Evangelista of Évora, also known as the Convento dos Lóios, was founded in the 1480s by D. Rodrigo de Melo, the first governor of Tanger and first Count of Olivença, and D. Álvaro de Portugal, the son of the second Duke of Bragança. It hosted a community of Secular Canons of St. John the Evangelist from 1491 onwards. During the whole 16th century, the conventual space was successively renovated. In 1541, the convent started managing the hospital of Portel.
The convent's church became the pantheon of the founder's descendants: the Dukes of Cadaval and the Marquises of Ferreira. The Earthquake of 1755 ruined the convent, which was already in a state of degradation. In the following years, the building was rebuilt with significant changes in the original structure.
After the dissolution of the monasteries in Portugal in 1834, the Convent of São João Evangelista was closed down. In the 20th century, the building hosted the Arquivo Distrital de Évora and other public services. At present, it s a hotel, the Pousada dos Lóios.
