Scope and content
-
The Família Ornelas Vasconcelos fonds comprises documents of several types and subjects produced by or related to this family. One of these records (Cx. 40, n.º 68) contains an 18th-century copy of the list of New Christians living on the island Madeira who paid the "finta" (tax) in 1605, the so-called "Rol dos judeus e seus descendentes" (List of Jews and their descendants). This "finta" resulted from the negotiations of the General Pardon (a legal instrument which granted absolution for transgressions of faith in the past, including faults of "Judaism") granted by Pope Clement VIII in August of 1604 by request of King Filipe II. The New Christians paid 1,700,000 cruzados (currency) to the Crown in exchange for the General Pardon. This list includes the amount paid by each New Christian in Madeira and information on their place of birth, marital status, profession, residence, etc. The whereabouts of the original document are currently unknown, but there are other two copies in the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (Inquisição de Lisboa, novos maços, maço 1, n.º 30; and Conselho Geral do Santo Ofício, Habilitações do Santo Ofício, maço 1, dilig. 21). This copy also includes records of discharge related to payments made by New Christians and documents concerning the "finta" posting. The document was published in Barros and Guerra (2003).

Administrative / Biographical history
-
The Ornelas Vasconcelos was a family from Northern Portugal settled on the island of Madeira since the beginning of its colonization in the 15th century. Álvaro de Ornelas was the first element to move to Madeira after having been in the Canary Islands. His son Álvaro de Ornelas Saavedra established the entail of Caniço and the chapel of Santo António in Funchal Cathedral, which became the family's grave.
Several members of the Ornelas Vasconcelos family excelled in the service to the Portuguese Crown, either in public administration, diplomatic functions, or military service in the overseas territories.
The history of this family is in evidence in its vast archive, one of the most extensive family archives under the custody of the Arquivo Regional da Madeira. This collection gathers records from several families that became part of the Ornelas Vasconcelos House, such as the Correia Olival, the Esmeraldo, the Ribeiro Carvalhal, and many others.
