Scope and content
The Colegiada de Santa Maria de Óbidos fonds comprises records related to or produced by the Collegiate and Church of Santa Maria in Óbidos. It includes letters of "visitação" (visit) of the church, inventories of assets, minutes of the Chapter meetings, wills, letters of donations, deeds of sale, "aforamento" and "emprazamento" (emphyteusis contracts) and other contracts, sentences, petitions, appeals, records on religious matters, etc.
Book 2 (PT/TT/CSMO/L02) contains the inventory of estates belonging to the Church of Santa Maria of Óbidos in the late 15th century. Among them, there were houses located in the "judiaria" (Jewish quarter) of Óbidos (fols. 1-2v). The description of the location of these houses contains some references to Jews who lived in the Jewish quarter in 1482, near the church's estates. It was the case of Josepe, a tailor, and Mousem, who held a part of an old house in the "judiaria"; the rest of the house belonged to the Church of Santa Maria of Óbidos.
Further information on the Jewish community of Óbidos can be found in other records. Here are some examples:
Maço (bundle) 11, no. 219 (PT/TT/CSMO/M11/219): "Emprazamento" (emphyteusis contract) of an estate called Calçada, close by the Jewish synagogue, which was located alongside the cellar of Isaque Freire, a Jew. November 26, 1333.
Maço 7, no. 122 (PT/TT/CSMO/M07/122): "Emprazamento" of a towering house in Óbidos to D. Rina, the widow of Isaque Freire, for five pounds per year. The house faced a street to the north and, to the south, houses belonging to Abraão Freire and other houses owned by D. Rina. June 30, 1372. Presumably, the towering house is the house mentioned in a document also dating from June 30, 1372, in which D. Rina withdrew a complaint against the prior of the Church of Santa Maria de Óbidos, Gonçalo Peres, who had taken her house by force (maço 12, no. 231, PT/TT/CSMO/M12/231).
Maço 7, no. 128 (PT/TT/CSMO/M07/128): Leasing of two houses in Rua Direita, made by the Church of Santa Maria to Josepe Freire, a Jew, for six pounds per year. The deed was signed "in front of the houses owned by Isaque Freire". April 5, 1375.
Maço 8, no. 143 (PT/TT/CSMO/M08/143): "Emprazamento" in three lives to João Afonso do Adro and Domingas Martins, his wife, of some houses with a workshop near Rua do Vale, in which Josepe, a Jewish blacksmith, had lived and worked. November 13, 1386.
Maço 16, no. 327 (PT/TT/CSMO/M16/327): Rental of some houses in Rua do Vale to Judas Gago, a Jew, for 80 pounds per year. June 8, 1398.
Maço 10, no. 199 (PT/TT/CSMO/M10/199): "Emprazamento" of houses in Rua do Vale that were adjacent to the house of Vimora Sallamão(?), a Jewish blacksmith. May 17, 1403.
Maço 1, no. (PT/TT/CSMO/M01/1): Sentence in favour of the prior and beneficiaries of the Church of Santa Maria de Óbidos against Abraão Francês and his son Samuel Levi; Belhamim, a blacksmith; Mousem; Abraão Velido; Isaac Alcarraz; Jacó da Atouguia and Belhamim, a weaver, who were represented by Samuel Capaço(?). At that time, their houses were part of the Jewish quarter; however, they used to be inhabited by Christians. Therefore, the Jews were compelled to pay to the church the tithes previously paid by the Christians who lived there in the past. June 17, 1438.
Maço 16, no. 304 (PT/TT/CSMO/M16/304): Sale of a "pardieiro" (a shack) in Óbidos by Maria Anes, a widow, to Judas Anbrom, a Jewish blacksmith, and his wife Palomba for 70 reais brancos (currency) per year. It was located in front of another "pardieiro" belonging to Santa Maria. An annotation to this deed informs that the church later bought the house. September 1, 1458.

Archival history
In 1848, it was legislated that the assets and incomes of the Collegiate of Santa Maria of Óbidos should be applied to maintain de patriarchal seminary of Santarém. In the following year, the records of the Collegiate were archived in the seminary's registry.
In 1862, the records were sent to the Torre do Tombo, together with many other documents of other collegiates. In 1915, further documentation coming from the Inspeção Geral das Bibliotecas (General Inspectorate of the Libraries) was added to the fonds.
At the end of the 1990s, the records from religious orders and institutions that were part of the Torre do Tombo collection were reorganised. The organisation by locality was discarded, and the records were aggregated according to their original religious institution, order or diocese.

Administrative / Biographical history
The history of the Church of Santa Maria of Óbidos dates back to the Christian conquest of the village in the mid-12th century. Then, the mosque was converted to a Christian church, which was dedicated to Saint Mary. The original building was completely restored in the early 16th century by order of Queen Leonor, widow of King João II, since the village belonged to the Casa das Rainhas (House of the Queens). The Collegiate of Santa Maria of Óbidos, also known as the Irmandade dos Clérigos Pobres da Vila de Óbidos (Brotherhood of the Poor Clerics of Óbidos), was only founded in 1582. The collegiates were communities of clerics and laymen with the purpose of ensuring the religious cult in churches. In the case of parish churches, the collegiates also had other specific functions, such as singing the canonical hours, celebrating masses, administering the sacraments and providing funeral ceremonies. The collegiates were headed by a prior and composed of a number of "beneficiados" (beneficiaries) or "raçoeiros" (literally, who received a ration), who were generally clerics but, exceptionally, also included a few laymen. The Collegiate of Santa Maria was composed of one prior and eight "beneficiados". It belonged successively to the bishopric, the archbishopric and the patriarchate of Lisbon, and it was under the protectorship of the King.
