Scope and content

The Archivio notarile mandamentale di Mondavio fonds is part of the extensive section of the Pesaro notary archive, kept in the local State Archive. It preserves protocols containing the acts drawn up by practicing notaries in Mondavio, Barchi, Montebello, Piagge, S. Giorgio di Pesaro, Torre, Orciano, Barbara, Cerasa, Fratte, Montemaggiore, Monteporzio, and other smaller neighbouring towns. The fonds contains other series aside from these protocols, such as registers of private and notarial deeds; “apoche” (payment receipts); archive copies; registers of instruments and copies filed in the archive; inventories; visits and registration of notaries.
Among the numerous records that compose the Notarial Archive of Mondavio fonds, there are some documents witnessing the Jewish presence in the city and surrounding areas. In particular, this fonds contains evidence of the existence of banks run by Jews, who exercised loaning and commercial activities in Montavio. Besides the commercial activity, the fonds also includes information regarding the Jewish community and its religious leadership, as is the case of records mentioning a rabi in Mondavio, Vita da Mondavio (Toaff, 1975).

Archival history

The Notarial Archive of Mondavio is part of the Pesaro District Notarial Archive since 1966. In 1980, Gian Galeazzo Scorza, then the director of the Pesaro State Archives, compiled an inventory of the collection. Years later, in 1999, a list was drawn up by the archivist Sonia Ferri.

Administrative / Biographical history

The notary activity in Mondavio follows the general events of the notary in the Marche region. Following the provisions of Pope Sixtus V (papacy: 1585-1590) issued in 1588, an archive was established in Mondavio in order to deposit and preserve the acts drawn up by local notaries. After the Restoration of Pope Pius VII (papacy: 1800-1823), the Mondavio Notarial Archive was given the status of “central" archive. In 1828, the archives of some neighbouring towns, such as Montebello and San Giorgio, were concentrated there. In the following decades, those of Fratte, Orciano, Barchi, and Torre were also incorporated into the Mondavio Notarial Archive. After the Italian unification, the Mondavio Notarial Archive was qualified as a “district" archive. In 1966, it was merged with the Pesaro District Notarial Archive, to which section it now belongs.
