Scope and content
The Pergola Notarial Archive "super-fonds", deposited in the Pesaro State Archives, preserves the protocols of the acts drawn up by notaries operating in Pergola, San Lorenzo in Campo, and neighbouring locations.
Among these documents, it is possible to find numerous pieces of evidence on the local Jewish presence, already attested since the 14th century. There is also evidence of the existence of a cemetery and a synagogue in Pergola in the 16th century. As occurred in other towns in the Marche region, the Jews in the Pergola area mainly exercised commercial and lending activities. The prosperity of the Jewish community of Pergola is attested in the municipal statutes since 1510. The studies of Toaff (1993) and Sebastianelli (1993) have reported numerous sources taken from notarial acts that attest to the importance of the economic activity developed by the Jews of Pergola. In fact, although a Monte di Pietà had been founded there, Jewish banks remained quite active in the city, at least until the devolution of the Duchy of Urbino. Yet, the integration into the Papal State in 1631 determined the departure of a part of the Jewish community.

Archival history
The Notarial Archive of Pergola, preserved in the Pesaro State Archives, is characterised as a "super-fonds", as it is composed of a complex of notarial fonds. The notarial collections of Pergola and San Lorenzo in Campo constitute the two main groups of the archive. The main nucleus of the archive of Pergola contains the protocols of the acts drawn up by notaries operating in Pergola, Fenigli, Montalfoglio, Monterolo, Montevecchio, San Vito, Serra Sant’Abbondio and Montesecco. The 'super-fonds' is supported by two inventories produced in the 19th century, one of which was drawn up by Giuseppe Orsini in 1842.
Administrative / Biographical history
The Notarial Archive of Pergola was established in 1588, following the disposition of Pope Sixtus V (papacy: 1585-1590), and was preserved at the Municipal seat until the Restoration (19th century). In 1822, at the behest of Pope Pius VII (papacy: 1800-1823), the notarial archives of Moterolo and San Vito were integrated into the Notarial Archive of Pergola, whilst the archive of Motesecco was only incorporated afterwards. A few years later, the notarial archives of Fenigli, Serra Sant’Abbondio, Montevecchio, and Montalfoglio were integrated into the Notarial Archive of Pergola as well. Finally, the central Notary Archive of San Lorenzo in Campo was incorporated into these archives in 1870. In the mid-19th century, when the archivist Giuseppe Orsini drew up the summary inventory still in use today, the documentation was still in the municipal office of Pergola. The Notarial Archive of Pergola was transferred to the State Archives of Pesaro in the 1980s and 1990s. The first transference occurred in 1985, followed by two others in 1994 and 1997. On that account, studies published prior to these years often indicate the old archival deposit in the city of Pergola.
