Scope and content
The District Notarial Archive of Fossombrone is part of the historical Notarial Archive of Pesaro, kept in the local State Archives. It is composed of numerous protocols drawn up by notaries operating in Fossombrone and neighbouring localities.
The numerous notarial acts drawn up in the Medieval and Early Modern periods constitute a valuable source of information for the reconstruction of the presence and daily life of the local Jewish community, which was particularly active in lending and commercial activities. Studies on Jewish bankers in the old Duchy of Urbino by Loevinson (1932-1934), Simonsohn (1988-1991), and Savelli (1993) have uncovered numerous sources on the Jewish community contained in this archive. From these sources, it is also possible to identify the existence of a synagogue and a cemetery in Fossombrone since the 16th century. The Jewish community settled in this city was apparently quite cohesive since the first decades of the 15th century, when elements of Sephardic origin moved to Fossombrone and settled there. The first community was presumably completely extinguished after the conquest of the Duchy of Urbino by Cesare Borgia at the beginning of the 16th century. Nonetheless, the community began to flourish again in the second half of the 16th century, reaching between 134 and 158 people in the early 17th century.

Archival history
The Fossombrone district notarial fonds is part of the extensive notarial section of Pesaro in the local State Archives. The Fossombrone fonds preserves the protocols in which were bound acts drawn up by the notaries operating in Fossombrone, Fratte, Isola del Piano, Monte Guiduccio, Sant’Ippolito, Campo, and other minor locations. Other series were added to these protocols, including other types of documents such as repertories and indexes, “apoche” (payment receipts), registrations of notaries, archive copies, and copy registers. The documentation is accompanied by a summary inventory drawn up in 1996 by Maria Neve Fogliamanzillo. This inventory describes the documentation with reference to localities and the names of the notaries.
Administrative / Biographical history
There is evidence of notary practice in Fossombrone since 1372. In 1588, following the provision of Pope Sixtus V (papacy: 1585-1590), an archive for the deposit and conservation of notarial acts was established. As with other district archives preserved in the notarial section of Pesaro, the archive of Fossombrone was qualified as a "central archive" in 1822, and as a 'district archive' in 1879, incorporating the various notarial archives of the neighbouring communities, such as Monte Guiduccio, Isola del Piano and Sant’Ippolito. In 1966, it was integrated into the current Pesaro district notary archive, deposited in the local State archives.
