Scope and content
The Archivio notarile mandamentale di Civitanova Marche fonds belongs to the vast collection of notarial archives preserved in the State Archives of Macerata. This fonds in particular contains acts written by practising notaries in Civitanova Marche, Montecosaro e Morrovalle, from the 15th to the 19th century.
Among these documents, there are numerous acts relating to Jews living in these territories, especially during the 16th century, when the Holy See granted the Jews the right to carry out lending activities. Their presence was severely opposed by Pope Paul IV, in particular, who promoted a campaign of intolerance against the Ponentine and Levantine Jews in the Marche. Numerous documents have been published by Simonsohn (1991) and more recently by Mampieri (2020).

Archival history
The notarial records of the Civitanova Marche district are composed of two sub-series: Protocolli (Protocols, 1445-1873) and Esibite, apoche, registri e varie (Exhibited documents, payment receipts, registers and varia, from 16th to 19th centuries). To these, another series of acts written by the notaries of Montecosaro (1480-1935) was added.
During the Napoleonic period, the Archivio notarile di Macerata (Notarial Archives of Macerata) became the general notarial archives of the Musone department, receiving all the other notarial archives of the department. With the Restoration, the materials returned to their respective places of origin but, in 1822, the Archivio notarile di Macerata was qualified as a “central” archive and received documents from smaller towns in the area, including Civitanova Marche.
In 1939, the notarial archives were deposited in the current State Archive of Macerata, where they were organised in autonomous fonds, within the vast section of the Notai (notary archives).

Administrative / Biographical history
The beginnings of the practice of the notary in the city of Civitanova Marche date back approximately to the 14th century, as occurred in other locations of the Marche region. The notary was then progressively organised during the 15th century.
The notary practice was often associated with the presence of a small Jewish community dedicated to trade and lending activities. The first indication of Jewish presence in Civitanova Marche in notarial records dates back to the beginning of the 15th century and reports the contribution given by Jews to the soldiers of the Rodolfo da Varano. Even in the 16th century, the Jews of Civitanova Marche had to pay annual taxes to the Duke of Camerino. The Holy See had allowed the Jews to develop lending activities both in Civitanova Marche and neighbouring towns. Records also testify to the presence of Jews in the locality of Montecosaro, where some Jewish lenders were active in 1528. The communities of these places suffered the restrictions and threats of Pope Paul IV and declined following the edict of expulsion in 1569.
