Scope and content

The notarial archive of Città di Castello contains the documents produced by notaries of the city, together with copies or “esibite” (copies exhibited as authentic), books of the “esibite”, books of the inventories, testaments of parish priests, books of apostolic visits, correspondence, among other documents.
Some protocols reused old Hebrew parchments to serve as bindings. In 1997, the restoration laboratory of the State Archives of Perugia carried out the detachment of 17 bindings with Hebrew texts, which were subsequently exhibited in the exhibition entitled “Manoscritti ebraici salvati dal rogo" (Hebrew manuscripts saved from the stake), set up in Città di Castello at the Villa Montesca.
Among these Hebrew fragments, eleven were found from two manuscripts of the Babylonian Talmud from the 13th-14th centuries, written in square Sephardic script. The manuscripts contain the Sanhedrin and Sèfer Halakòt treatises. The signatures are the following:
Framm. Ebr. 8, T. III, from Archivio Notarile Mandamentale (ANM), prot. 106/1, not. Girolamo di Nardo (1545-1549): Sanhedrin treatise, 8a-9a.
Framm. Ebr. 18. I, T. III, from ANM, prot. 138/2, not. Sante di Girolamo Lignani (1579-1581): Sanhedrin, 46b-49b.
Framm. Ebr. 21. I, T. III, from ANM, prot. 138/5, not. Sante di Girolamo Lignani (1588-1591): Sanhedrin, 46b-49b.
Framm. Ebr. 24. I, T. III, from ANM, prot. 138/9, not. Sante di Girolamo Lignani (1601-1605): Sanhedrin, 35a-36a.
Framm. Ebr. 19. I, T. III, from ANM, prot. 138/3, not. Sante di Girolamo Lignani (1582-1585): Sanhedrin.
Framm. Ebr. 20. I, T. III, from ANM, prot. 138/4, not. Sante di Girolamo Lignani (1584-1587): Sanhedrin, 46b-49b.
Framm. Ebr. 22. I, T. III, from ANM, prot. 138/7, not. Sante di Girolamo Lignani (1591-1606): Sanhedrin, 46b-49b.
Framm. Ebr. 6, T. IV, from ANM, prot. 80/17, not. Andreuccio di Giulio (1562-1564): Sèfer Halakòt, Bavà metzià treatise (by Isaac Alfasi), 31a-31b.
Framm. Ebr. 7, T. IV, from ANM, prot. 80/9, not. Andreuccio di Giulio (1562-1564): Sèfer Halakòt, Bavà metzià, 46b-47a.
Framm. Ebr. 7, T. IV, from ANM, prot. 80/9, not. Andreuccio di Giulio (1549-1551): Sèfer Halakòt, 42b-45b, 46b-47a.
Framm. Ebr. 2, T. IV, from ANM, prot. 80/10, not. Andreuccio di Giulio (1551-1552): Sèfer Halakòt, Bavà metzià treatise, 55a.
The collection also includes two fragments of manuscript Bibles produced in the Sephardic area, possibly from North Africa, in the 12th and 13th centuries, both written in square Sephardic script:
Framm. Ebr. 14, B. I, from ANM, prot. 129/10, not. Giacomo Cordoni (1581-1585): 12th-century Bible (2 Samuel).
Framm. Ebr. 9, B. III, from ANM, prot. 109/5, not. Fabio di Gennaro (1564-1572): 13th-century Bible (Jeremiah).

Archival history

The district notary archive of Città di Castello is defined as a "super-fonds" because it unites two main archives produced by notary offices operating in the city: the first comprises records until 1879, and the second, known as “mandamentale (district)”, includes records produced after this date. This super-fonds was subjected to the census of the notarial documentation preserved in the municipal historical archives carried out in the 1990s by the Archival Superintendency for Umbria. On that occasion, the coordinator of the census, the official Stefania Maroni, drew up an inventory. Prior to this inventory, Olita Franceschini had filed and organised the records and a first printed inventory composed by notary Ettore Cecchini had been published in 1899.

Administrative / Biographical history

Known by the name of “Tifernum”, Città di Castello was founded by the Umbrians. Later, it became a Roman municipality. From the Middle Ages to the dominion of the Longobards, first, and the Franks, later, Città di Castello was subject to a bond of fidelity with the Catholic Church. In 1180, it became a free municipality. However, in the struggles between the Papacy and the Empire, it assumed either the Guelphs or the Ghibellines parties from time to time, until it entered the orbit of the lordship of Niccolò Vitelli. Towards the late 15th century, after Vitelli’s death, Città di Castello became a permanent part of the Papal States, together with all Umbrian territories. This situation remained until the Italian unification in the 19th century.
Since the end of the 14th century, there is evidence of the presence of some Jewish individuals and families in Città di Castello, mainly dedicated to lending and commercial activities. Over time, a Jewish community was formed in the city. Already in the second half of the 15th century, there was a synagogue and a Jewish cemetery in Città di Castello. Although there is no evidence of an autonomous community of Sephardic origin, the existence of Sephardic individuals in the city since the 14th century is evidenced by some documentary traces, such as the circulation of Sephardic manuscripts.
