Scope and content
The Comune di Terni fonds, currently preserved in the State Archives, preserves documentation produced by the municipality of Terni and the smaller centres of Cesi, Torreorsina and Papigno. The archive is particularly divided into four distinct sub-fonds, arranged according to the transfer stages of the documentation from the Town Hall to the State Archives. The I versamento sub-fonds corresponds to the first deposit of the municipal records in the Archivio di Stato di Terni. According to Simonsohn (1988) and Toaff (1993), the documentation relating to the Jewish community of Terni, including those of Sephardic origin, can be found in the I versamento sub-fonds, namely in the following series: Riformations; Judicial acts; Prisons; “Catasti antichi” (registers of lands), Commerce, Industry, and fairs; Visits; and Miscellaneous.
Archival history
The oldest papers of the municipality of Terni were originally kept in a chest in the monastery of San Procolo by the Franciscan Tertiaries. In 1507, the chest was transferred to the church of San Francesco and, in 1564, entrusted to the Augustinians and placed in the convent of San Pietro. In 1809, when Umbria became part of the Napoleonic empire, the municipal fonds of Terni was placed in the Carrara Palace, then the seat of the municipal offices. The fonds was incorporated into the State Archives in four separate transfers. The first one took place in 1963. The documentation as received is the result of an archival organisation carried out in the 18th century.
Administrative / Biographical history
The city of Terni was founded by the Romans around 672 BC, with the Latin name “Interamna". Terni evolved as an important traffic centre along the Via Flaminia. In the Middle Ages, it became part of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto. In the 12th century, Terni became part of the "Patrimony of Saint Peter", the landed possessions belonging to the Holy See. It was then that the municipality began to develop, with frequent conflicts with the Roman seat, which claimed loyalty to its vassals. From 1416 to 1420, Terni was under the rule of the condottiero Braccio da Montone (1368-1424), who exercised his lordship over a large part of Umbria. Afterwards, it returned to the Papal States, forming part of the Umbrian province until the Restoration in 1816. Then, Terni was reorganised within the papal delegation of Spoleto until the process of Italian unification in 1860.
