Scope and content

The Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Rosa fonds contains documentation produced by or related to this monastery in Caparica, near Lisbon. It includes emphyteusis contracts, deeds of sale, donations and exchanges of estates, royal letters, certificates, nominations, inventories, licences, sentences, wills, appeals, and various other types of documents related to the administration and daily life of the monastery and its assets.
Regarding Jewish-related material, it contains a deed of sale of a farm with a house, a vineyard, a grove and a winepress located near Caparica, made by Pero Vaz da Veiga to Guedelha Gualite, a Jewish merchant of Lisbon, and his wife Ester on August 4, 1474 (PT/TT/MNSRC/M002/000005). A digital copy of this record is available on the Torre do Tombo online database.

Archival history

After the extinction of the Convento do Santíssimo Sacramento, the assets of the former Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Rosa were delivered to the Próprios da Fazenda Nacional (National Assets) and its documents were stored in the registry of the Repartição de Fazenda do Distrito de Lisboa (Department of the Estate of the District of Lisbon). In 1883, they were transferred to the National Archive of Torre do Tombo.
In the late 1990s, the arrangement of the ecclesiastic records preserved in the Torre do Tombo, including documents from the Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Rosa, was changed. Thus, it was adopted an organisation by religious order instead of the previous organisation by place name.
In 2001, the Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Rosa da Caparica fonds was reorganised. The original numbering of the documents were recovered and they were organised and ordered according to the primary arrangement. The documents listed in the inventory of the archive made at the moment of its incorporation into the Torre do Tombo, in 1883, (C 354) were gathered in the "maços de pergaminhos" (bundles of parchments) 1 to 3, and in the "maços de papéis" (bundles of papers) 1 and 2. The records that were not included in this inventory were gathered in the bundles of papers 3, 4, 12, 13 and 15. Therefore, the fonds is composed of 10 bundles, whose numbering is not sequential.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Rosa da Caparica was founded around the end of the 14th century or the beginning of the following century. It housed the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit. According to a record of the time, the hermit Mendo Gomes de Seabra carried out a reform of the monastery in 1445. Then, it was put under the custody of another monastery of the same order in Serra de Ossa, in Alentejo. In the early 16th century, it was named Santa Maria da Rosa. In 1645, properties and goods of the extinguished Monastery of Junqueira were transferred to the Monastery of Santa Maria da Rosa.
The monastery was closed at the beginning of the 19th century, as determined by the Order of Saint Paul. Its proprieties and incomes were transferred to the Convent of Santíssimo Sacramento in Lisbon. Later on, its goods were incorporated into the Próprios da Fazenda Nacional (National Assets). The building served as a farming villa, named Quinta da Rosa, for the rest of the century. The remains of the old building disappeared around the early 20th century.
