Within the civil and judicial fonds preserved in the Diocesan Historical Archive of Osimo, it is possible to find the series of judicial documents produced by the curia of Appignano, a small town in the Osimo district. This series is divided into civil and criminal acts.
There is a unit designated “Appignano, cause, 1743-1755” that holds general information on the Osimo district. This unit, dating from the middle 18th century, contains information about the local Jewish community. For instance, it includes a memorial history drawn up by the Jewish community of Ancona, which had a significant Sephardi presence. This memorial history dates from 1755 and highlights the relationship between bishops and inquisitors on Jewish matters. This documentation was published by Pedrini-Barontini (2020).

Archival history
-
The Diocesan Historical Archive of Osimo is now a part of the largest archival complex of the metropolitan seat of the archdiocese of Ancona-Osimo, even if with autonomous and distinct headquarters. On September 28, 1972, Bishop Carlo Maccari, who was already archbishop of Ancona-Numana, was also appointed bishop of Osimo, thus uniting in his person the two previous diocesan sees. After various ups and downs and transfers, the Osimo archive has found a permanent seat in some rooms of the bishop’s city palace. It is composed of 17 distinct collections directly produced by the Episcopal Curia, as well as nine others produced by the government of the diocese, such as the Atii giudiziari (Judicial Acts), the collection to which the above-described Appignano documentation belongs.

Administrative / Biographical history
-
Appignano is a small town erected in the Medieval Ages. Notarial documents referring to a "castrum Appignanin" show evidence of its emergence at the beginning of the 13th century. At the time, it was under the jurisdiction of the municipality of Osimo, which in those years enjoyed a certain autonomy, often entering into conflict with the more important city of Ancona. The diocesan bishop of Osimo held civil and criminal jurisdiction over the small towns in his municipality, such as Appignano. There is evidence of the presence of a small Jewish community in Osimo since the 16th century, as well as of the existence of a synagogue and cemetery, indicating community life. At the time, this community was in close relationship with the largest Jewish community of Ancona and was regulated according to the laws in force in the Papal State in the Early Modern Age.
