Scope and content
The Casa de Santa Iria fonds derives from a family archive whose records are essentially related to the administration of estates located in several districts of continental Portugal and the Azores. Therefore, most of the documentation records "aforamentos" (emphyteusis contracts), donations, sales, revenues and expenses, etc. The fonds also comprises papers of family members, namely correspondence, "mercês" (favours), papal bulls and briefs, and legal documents regarding family properties.
The fonds contains some late 15th-century and early 16th-century records that provide important evidence on the aftermath of the expulsion of the Jews from Portugal. An example is a document (caixa 6, doc. 82) dating from December 5, 1499, that reports an order given by King Manuel I to Tristão de Oliveira to present the title proving that he had "emprazado" (leased by emphyteusis contract) half of a house on the Rua Direita of Santarém that belonged to the Hospital of São Martinho. Tristão de Oliveira was a New Christian, and this document uncovers his previous Jewish name: the first name is illegible, but his surname was Çamaia. Following King Manuel I's order, he presented two documents: one dated September 9, 1463, and the other dated April 10, 1467. The first proved that the hospital had leased the house in three lives to Judas Vasques (probably a Jew) for 150 reais (currency) and two hens per year. The other showed that Judas Vasques, with the hospital's consent, gave half of those houses to Josepe Sotil, a Jew. The hospital later gave this half to João Fernandes, a New Christian, who, as a Jew, was named Gota. The other half was inherited by Tristão de Oliveira, as heir to Judas Vasques. This kind of information regarding the previous identity of Jewish converts is not very common, but it allows researchers to trace the background of these early New Christians.
This fonds also comprises some 16th-century records with slight information regarding the location of the "judiaria" (Jewish quarter) of Setúbal. It is the case of an "aforamento" (emphyteusis contract) on December 12, 1547, of three houses in Setúbal, one of them located in a street heading to the location of the former Jewish quarter (caixa 6, docs. 65, 66 and 67).
We would like to thank Pedro Pinto for the information regarding these records.

Archival history
This fonds gathers documentation from three noble houses united by marriages. The documentation was stored in the archive of the Counts of Óbidos-Palma-Sabugal until the mid-20th century when it was transferred to the House of the Marquises of Santa Iria. In 1995, the Portuguese State bought the records in an auction. Then, the documentation was incorporated into the National Archive of Torre do Tombo. Yet, the records were not organised; a part of them was numbered, but there was no clear organisation criteria.
Administrative / Biographical history
The title of Count of Sabugal was granted to D. Duarte de Castelo Branco in 1582. In the 16th century, two other noble houses were created and given to families with the surname Mascarenhas: the House of Palma and the House of Óbidos. In 1624 and 1636 respectively, the heads of these houses received the title of Count. In 1638, the houses of Sabugal and Palma were united by marriage. The houses of Palma and Óbidos were also united by marriage in 1669, after the second Count of Óbidos married the third Countess of Palma. In 1833, Queen Maria II granted the title of Marquis of Santa Iria to Luís Roque de Sousa Coutinho Monteiro de Paim, already Count of Alva. in 1833. In 1839, the son of the first Marquis married the sixth Countess of Óbidos and Sabugal and seventh Countess of Palma, and all these noble houses were united in the House of Santa Iria.

System of arrangement
The organisation of this fonds followed the nature of the records. It is organised into two sections: "Atividade Privada" (Private Activity) and "Atividade Pública" (Public Activity).
The first section is divided into two subsections, "Administração Patrimonial" (Estate Administration) and "Documentos Judiciais" (Judicial Documents), both subdivided into various series. The first section also comprises other 19 series that do not integrate a subsection.
The second section contains one subsection, "Documentos Judiciais" (Judicial Documents), subdivided into ten series, and nine other series outside this subsection.
Outside the two main sections of this fonds, there are other three series: one for documents from the Pope and the Holy See, other for various other documents not related to other subsection or series, and a third series containing the inventory of the registry of the House of Palma, Sabugal and Óbidos in 1836.
The series are numbered, and most of them are organised alphabetically. Within the series, whenever was justified, the records were grouped by geographical criteria.
