Scope and content
The Irmandade de São Crispim e São Crispiniano fonds comprises several types of documents regarding the administration, estates, and members of this brotherhood and of the Confraria dos Sapateiros (Shoemakers Brotherhood) from the 14th century onwards. It includes a collection of parchments dated from 1410 to 1543. Some of them include posterior copies that were sewn to the originals. This collection of parchments contains four "emprazamentos" (emphyteusis contracts) related to the Jewish community of Porto. They are the following:
PT/ADPRT/CON/ISCC/DIR/002/00004: Isabel Afonso, the widow of Vasco Fernandes Caminha (parents of Pero Vaz Caminha), leased half of a house in the judiaria (Jewish quarter) to Isaac Marcos, a Jewish physician and surgeon. October 13, 1478. Three other Jews — Farom Coffrem, Samuel Furado, and Abraão Benamim's wife — are mentioned as living in houses next to the said estate. A 17th-century copy is in PT/ADPRT/CON/ISCC/DIR/002/00017.
PT/ADPRT/CON/ISCC/DIR/002/00006: The "provedor" (president) and "confrades" (fellows) of the Hospital dos Sapateiros (Shoemakers Hospital), leased half of a house in the Jewish quarter to Moisés Coimbrão, a Jewish tailor, and his son Abraão Coimbrão. The other half of the house pertained to Mosse Parente. The building was adjacent to Samuel Cealam's house. January 25, 1480. A 17th-century copy is in PT/ADPRT/CON/ISCC/DIR/002/00018.
Both documents were copied in 1679 (
PT/ADPRT/CON/ISCC/DIR/002/00017 and
PT/ADPRT/CON/ISCC/DIR/002/00018) to certify a donation given by Vasco Fernandes Caminha to the Confraria dos Sapateiros. Then, the brotherhood donated an amount of 600 "reais brancos" (currency) resulting from the houses' income to the Monastery of São Francisco, on the condition of a mass being celebrated by the friars, every Friday, for the soul of Vasco Fernandes Caminha (PT/ADPRT/CON/ISCC/DIR/001/00012).

Archival history
The fonds is deposited in the Arquivo Distrital do Porto but remains in the custody of the Irmandade de S. Crispim e S. Crispiniano.
Administrative / Biographical history
The Irmandade de São Crispim e São Crispiniano was founded by shoemakers, dressers, and tanners in the 13th century. A meeting minute of the Administrative Board of the brotherhood in 1924 mentioned the celebration of its 700th anniversary, dating the Irmandade de São Crispim e São Crispiniando foundation on October 5, 1224. Thus, it probably is the oldest religious brotherhood in Portugal with regular activity.
Until the 19th century, the brotherhood was installed in "Ponte de São Domingos" (St. Dominic Bridge), at the beginning of the streets Rua de Santana and Rua de São João (previously, Rua da Biquinha). When this building was demolished in the 19th century, the Irmandade de São Crispim e São Crispiniano was headquartered in a house in the Rua Mousinho da Silveira.

The documents with references to Jews of Porto are part of the "Prazos" series, incorporated in the "Direcção ou Mesa Gerente" (Management Board) section, one of the two sections that compose this fonds. The other section is "Assembleia Geral" (General Assembly). Most records are arranged chronologically.
