Synopsis
Ship: Charlotte. Captain: Nathaniel Briggs. Destination: Barbados. Briggs should land his passengers in Barbados and endeavour to dispatch there the whole or a part of the cargo. "You are no stranger to the chief motive that induces us to send you to Barbados, which is to satisfy yourself and us, that our friends Mess. Jones & Moc have or are making sufficient dispositions for the payment in London of all the bills thus remitted there, by our orders and on our account, for the net proceeds of the Cleopatra's last cargo of slaves, which are all noted for non acceptance, agreeable to the protest you have here inclosed; or in case they should when due be protested, that they have made provission for taking them up with damages &c, in which we would by all means request you to be particularly carefull, that they give you ample satisfaction". As soon as Briggs has done his business at Barbados, he should proceed directly to the Mole. If he find that Jones & Moc at Barbados cannot satisfy his demands, "you are then to endeavour by every prudent means to oblige them to give us such securities (which by the protest of non acceptance our friend in England tell us we have an undoubted right to demand) as will make us perfectly safe and for which purpose we here with deliver you sufficient power of attorney". If Briggs needs to stay more time at Barbados to solve this business, he should dispatch the ship directly to the Mole under the command of Captain Benjamin Allen, his present mate, and address the ship and the cargo to Captain John Dupuy, to whom Briggs will write and forward the bill of lading and invoice of the cargo. In the case of matters at Barbados appearing in safe state, Briggs should proceed to the Mole and there convert his cargo into a load of molasses to Newport. If the net proceeds of the cargo will be more than the value of the molasses, Briggs should invest the remainder in sugars, both of the best quality. "As you seem apprehensive, there may happen some difficulty in landing your passengers at Barbados, of which we see no danger, for we know of no instance, that our society has ever been refused, as they never be came a charge to any parish. Nevertheless, should it so happen, you may in your way to the Mole, stop at Statia, land them there, and proceed to the Mole as aforesaid".
