Synopsis

Schooner Mary and Brigantine Charlotte. Captain: Ebenezer Shearman. Destination: Gaspé. Cod fishery. In Gaspé, Shearman should deliver the inclosed letter to Captain Thomas Earnshey, who will assist Shearman and spare him "some of the ground and front" he improves at Gaspé so as Shearman may be the better able to carry on the fishery from the time he arrives till about the first of August next. After this period, Shearman should break off fishing, deliver up the schooner to Captain Earnshey and receive from him Lopez's brigantine Charlotte, which he should take under his command and load with many barrels of alewives and the remainder of the cargo in dry fish, "which you are to see screwed up into the hhds, I have not put on board the schooner and the brigantine Charlotte; and for that purpose you have a frame to screw the fish with which when you have done leave the frame with Captain Earnshey". Shearman should follow an annexed bill of lading enumerating the contents of whatever he may ship on Lopez's account on board the brigantine Charlotte for Kingston or any port of Jamaica. In Kingston, he should dispose of his cargo. In case Benjamin Wright is then in Kingston, he should deliver him the cargo and follow his directions. In case of his absence and the markets at Kingston proves low, Shearman should try any other ports he may judge best and there invest his cargo in molasses, with which he should return home as soon as possible. Lopez enclosed an invoice for sundries that he shipped on board the schooner Mary to dispose of at Gaspé in exchange for good dry cod. The unsold goods should be delivered to Captain Earnshey. An enclosed letter to John Denny, which should be delivered to him at Bona Ventura, with the few articles enumerated an annexed invoice. Also, two accepted orders by Henry Wall (one for 30 quintals of fish, and the other for £20.7.6 to be paid in fish). If the fish that Shearman obtains from the fishery in Gaspé proves insufficient to load the brigantine Charlotte, Shearman should call on Captain Thomas Earnshey to deliver him on Lopez's account pickled herring and dry cod. Out of Lopez's own fish, Shearman should separate the value of 25 dollars, which he should carry to Jamaica in fish for account and risk of Lopez's nephews. If Shearman finds molasses scarce at Jamaica, he may take some rum. What monies he may pick up, he should keep in order to stop at the Mole and lay it out in molasses. Inclosed sundry notes of hand from the several fishermen belonging to the schooner, which Shearman are to receive of them at the market price in Gaspé: Silas Devol, Thomas Simmons, David Brayton, Benjamin Cunningham, George Smith, John Bailee, John Denny, Henry Wall.
