Scope and content
The Books of Agreements of the Concello (1432-1460) include several references to Jews in Galicia, in particular concerning the collaboration of Jews with local tax management and internal aspects of the community, such as conflicts and relations with Christians. The Papeis do Concello (Concello papers) section includes some 15th-century municipal "padróns" (censuses) with references to Jews from the region. There are also references to Jews in the "Libro de notas de Álvaro Afonso" (Alvaro Afonso notebook". These documents were published by Anselmo López Carreira.
Archival history
The Provincial Historical Archive of Ourense (AHPOu) was founded in 1943 on the initiative of Xesús Ferro Couselo, following the decree of November 12, 1931, that established the creation of provincial historical archives. Although the AHPOu was installed on a temporary basis in the Treasury Archive, the interim period lasted longer than expected. It was only in January 1964 that the new facilities were inaugurated, resulting in a substantial improvement in the conditions of the archive.
In 1969, Olga Gallego Domínguez became the director of the archive. The application of decree 14/1969, which enabled the provincial historical archives to collect documentation produced by the peripheral administration of the state up to 15 years old, made the AHPOu not only a historical but also an intermediate archive.
Over time, other fonds were incorporated into the archive coming from different provenances by acquisitions, donations, bequests, deposits, and current transfers made by different administrative units.
