Scope and content
The Leo Hershkowitz Collection comprises original documents related to Jews living in New York from the 1680s to the early 18th century, namely inventories of assets and financial records. The following are related to Sephardic Jews:
Folder 1: Inventory and appraisement of assets belonging to Ester Brown, late of New York, taken at the request of her executrix and daughter Abigail Brown. New York, July 1, 1708.
Folder 2: Inventory and appraisement of goods and chattels of the estate of Joseph Bueno, deceased. New York, November 12, 1768. Lewis Gomez and Abraham de Lucena were executors of Bueno's estate. It also includes a list of several debts belonging to Bueno's estate and an account of the administration of Lewis Gomez and Abraham de Lucena, executors of the last will of Joseph Bueno. February 19, 1710.
Folder 4: Financial record (New York State, 1752), namely a list of "city seal creditors", including references to Rowland De Paiba freedom (May 15, 1756, £3.0.0), Isaac Mendes and other merchants (December 22, 1756), and John Moraes (July 31, 1758, £1.12.0)
Folder 7: Inventory of goods, chattels and credits of Isaac Rodrigues Marques, late of New York, deceased merchant, taken on January 19, 1707, and exhibited by Rachel, his widow and executrix, on April 9, 1708. Includes references to a voyage to Curaçao, carrying three barrels of "bisket" (biscuit?) consigned to Solomon Levy Maduro and another to "Novis" (Nevis?), consigned to Isaac Pinero. Aaron Lamego of Jamaica was one of the creditors of Marques' estate.
