Scope and content
This collection is composed of one volume containing a summary inventory of the documentation of the Jurade (Bordeaux Municipal Council) from 1520 to 1783. It is an alphabetical repertory containing information about deliberations issued by the "jurats" (the members of the Municipal Council), including detailed information and full transcriptions of documents, some of them destroyed in the sequence of a fire in 1862.
Considering the importance of the Portuguese "nação" (nation, community) of Bordeaux, this repertory includes information on numerous documents concerning Iberian Conversos and Sephardic Jews, in particular regarding the acquisition of naturalization or citizenship from the Bordeaux city authorities. It is the case of the physician Francisco Lopes, a Portuguese New Christian (1601, fol. 99); Francisco Cardoso Sénior (1648, fol. 28); Manuel Cardoso Sénior (1659, fol. 72); António Lopes Depas (1679, fol. 105); Jacob Pereira Brandon (1731, fol. 52); David Gradis (1731, fol. 199); and of Jacques Nunes de Pereyra (1760, fol. 169). See Carvalho (1936).
However, the names of Iberian Conversos and Sephardic Jews (for instance, members of the Gradis family) also appear in other kinds of documents abstracted in this repertory. It should be consulted the edition of this repertory by Boisvukke et al. (1896-1947), whose content is available online at archive.org or in a database published at ancestry.com.

Archival history
The "Inventaire sommaire des registres de la Jurade dressé par l'abbé Baurein" was initiated on October 29, 1751, following a Conseil d'État's decision to ensure the organisation and accessibility of the documents of the Bordeaux Municipal Council. The result was a work carried out for more than 30 years, not only by Abbé Jacques Baurein, but also by Jean Magnouac, Jacques Lebrement, Joseph-François Mallet, Jean-Zacharie Basseterre and François-Joachim Allien.
Administrative / Biographical history
Jacques Baurein was a French priest, historian and geographer. He was born in Bordeaux on July 16, 1713, and attended the Saint-Raphaël seminary in Bordeaux. In 1739, Baurein was appointed curate at Cissac and then at Saint-André-de-Cubzac. In 1754, he returned to Bordeaux and began to work on the archives of the parish of Saint-Michel. After this return, he started to collaborate in the composition of the summary inventory of the records of the Jurade of Bordeaux. In addition, he also began to publish in the journal Recueil d'annonces, affiches et avis divers pour la ville de Bordeaux (Collection of announcements, posters and miscellaneous notices for the city of Bordeaux). On June 9, 1761, he became a member of the Académie de Bordeaux.
Baurein's best-known work, Variétés bordeloises, was published in six volumes from 1784 to 1786, but it gained more fame about one century later when it was reprinted in a 3-volume edition by Georges Méran in 1876. Baurien died in Bordeaux on May 23, 1790.
