Administrative / Biographical history
The Lopes Colaço company was a partnership of the brothers Abraham and Selomoh Lopes Colaço. Abraham was born in Peyrehorade, northeast of Bayonne, and moved to Amsterdam, where he founded a trading company with his brother around 1700. The company was dissolved in 1722 when Abraham left for Bayonne, but he continued trading with Amsterdam with the involvement of the brothers Selomoh and Benjamin.
After the death of Abraham Lopes Colaço on December 21, 1728, the firm in Bayonne was continued under the name "De weduwe Abraham Lopes Colaçco en zoon" (Abraham Lopes Colaço's widow and son). The son who took over the business was Aron Colaço. After almost 30 years in Bayonne, he returned to Amsterdam in 1751, where he married his cousin Gracia Abenacar, daughter of Jacob Abenacar. Aron, his wife Gracia and his sisters Ester and Lea died of cholera and were buried on April 14, 1774, in the cemetery at Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. Aron left behind a minor son, Abraham (born November 12, 1752).
