Scope and content
The Secrétariat d’État de la maison du roi subfonds is part of the general Maison du roi sous l’Ancien régime (King's Household in the Ancien Régime) fonds. It contains the private archives of the French Crown, including information on the domestic organisation of the King's Household. It encompasses a broad range of topics, including civil and religious administration of the city of Paris and other parts of the kingdom. It also contains information about different institutions that were under the King's protection or administration, such as the Collège royal de France (Royal College of France), the Bibliothèque du roi (the King's Library), the Jardin des Plantes (literally, the Garden of the Plants, i.e. a botanic garden), the Imprimerie royale (Royal Printing Office), and other institutions.
Among this extensive collection are several items relating to the presence of Iberian conversos and Sephardic Jews in the French kingdom. Particularly interesting is the documentation related to the residence and economic activities of Sephardic Jews in Bayonne and Bordeaux in the 18th century. It is the case of a letter from the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs on December 22, 1728, providing information on Jewish families of Saint-Esprit quartier in Bayonne, namely about the economic deprivation of some of them, and asking for measures to reduce the number of families in need, including by removing them from the kingdom (O/1/508, Maison du roi sous l’Ancien régime, Secrétariat d’État de la maison du roi, Correspondance du ministre avec les provinces: lettres reçues et envoyées).

Archival history
The Archives Nationales were created after the French Revolution, receiving this name from the Constituent Assembly on September 12, 1790. Four years later, the National Convention passed a law on June 25, 1794, establishing the Archives' functions following the same three principles that still apply today: the centralization of the national archives, free public access, and the need for a national archives network. Thus, the Archives Nationales gradually received several fonds, even from central institutions suppressed by the French Revolution and church archives.
In 1808, Napoleon I (reign: 1804-14, 1815) allocated the Hôtel de Soubise as a temporary location for the Archives Nationales. A specific building was to be built on the Champ-de-Mars, but the project was never carried out. Therefore, during the 19th century, the Archives Nationales started expanding around the Hôtel de Soubise within the building of the "grands dépôts" (great depositories) under Louis-Philippe (reign: 1830–48) and Napoleon III (1852–70). In 1927, the Archives Nationales moved to the Hôtel de Rohan, previously home to the Imprimerie Nationale (National Printing House). However, the building soon became too small to house all collections. In 1972, the former NATO buildings in Fontainebleau were allocated to the Archives Nationales, to house the archival deposits from the ministries. In 1988, a large building was opened in Paris, the CARAN (Centre d'accueil et de recherche des Archives Nationales).
The lack of space in the buildings of Paris and Fontainebleau and the remoteness of the Fontainebleau building obliged to plan a third location for the Archives Nationales. In 2004, the French government chose the site of Pierrefitte-sur-Seine to serve as the location for a new building, which was built in the following years. The architect Massimiliano Fuksas was responsible for this project. The Pierrefitte-sur-Seine site of the Archives Nationales was inaugurated on February 11, 2013.

Administrative / Biographical history
The Maison du roi (King's Household) grew out of the old Hôtel du roi (King's House) and was originally a domestic body of servants of the king who looked after his daily life and regulated the pomp of his public life. Each of its departments was entrusted to a senior officer of the Crown. The authority over all departments was delegated to a Secretary of State from the last Valois.
Definitively organised in the 17th century, the Maison du roi expanded during the reign of Louis XIV (1654-1715), following the increase of the Court, the rigour of etiquette and the domestication of the nobility. Its main services bear the mark of Colbert (1619-83), who was secrétaire d’État de la Maison du roi (Secretary of State for the King's Household): he had the first inventories drawn up and opened the Journal du Garde-meuble, regulated the accounting of the Menus-Plaisirs and the Bâtiments, and prescribed the regular registration of royal acts and ministerial dispatches. The Maison du roi was one of the most important ministries when its archives were seized from its two repositories in Paris, the Vieux-Louvre and the Grands-Augustins.
