Scope and content
The Manuscripts collection of the Archives Bordeaux Métropole comprises materials of diverse provenances, themes, and chronologies that were placed together under the same collection in the 1930s. Being part of the Municipal Archives, most of them are related to the history of Bordeaux and to some remarkable figures of the city.
The collection contains some items regarding Jewish topics, such as the following:
Bordeaux 66 S 257 (former MS 4): an 18th-century miscellany on Jewish religion, including a letter attributed to the abbot of Four de Longuerue on Jews; a Response to the Sermon of the Archbishop of Cranganor (David Nieto's Respuesta?); and to fragments of dissertation on Jews and Jewish religion.
Bordeaux II 227 (former MS 734): Letters addressed to Marc-Antoine de Verteuil, baron de Maleret, lieutenant-colonel of infantry and jurat of Bordeaux: includes a report dating from June 1718 that counted about 100 Jewish families living in Bordeaux, 70 of whom were wealthy enough to support themselves and contribute to relieving the other 30 impoverished families. The Jewish community of Bordeaux was composed of about 400-500 members, including women and children. The report contains more information regarding this community.
Bordeaux 68 S 21 (former MS 593): Ernest Gaullieur's "Notes historiques sur les juifs à Bordeaux de 1028 au XVIIIe siècle" (Historical notes on the Jews of Bordeaux from 1028 to the 18th century). 19th century.

Archival history
The collection is composed of isolated pieces and items from small private collections (Fonds Beaumartin, Fonds Charles Braquehaye, Fonds Leo Drouyn, Fonds Edvard de Fayolle, Fonds Fieffe, Fonds Albert Gaillard, Fonds Ernest Gaullieur, Fonds de la Tresne, Fonds Marionneau-Lalanne, Fonds Pierre Meller, Fonds Pedroni, Fonds Hovyn de Tranchère, Fonds de Verteuil, Fonds Aurélien Vivie, Fonds Jules Delpit) that were inserted in a collection of manuscripts formed during the 1930s. Its catalogue was published in 1938.
Administrative / Biographical history
The origins of the Bordeaux archives date back to the creation of the commune by Eleanor of Aquitaine (c. 1122–1204) at the end of the 12th century.
The archive suffered numerous losses in the fire that ravaged the Palais Rohan in 1862, affecting numerous collections. Since then, the archive has continuously grown, with the incorporation of documents from public or private collections.
Installed in the Hôtel de Ragueneau in 1939, the archive was moved in 2015 and joined the common service of the Bordeaux Métropole Archives on March 1, 2016.
