Scope and content

The Lamoignon collection comprises genealogical papers, property titles, and documents related to several members of the Lamoignon family. Overall, the fonds is divided into two major groups: the Papiers du Chancelier de Lamoignon de Blancmesnil (Papers of Chancellor de Lamoignon de Blancmesnil), related to Guillaume II de Lamoignon (1683-1772) and the Papiers de son fils, le ministre Malesherbes (Papers of his son, the minister Malesherbes), related to Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721-94). The documents of the Chancellor de Lamoignon, in particular those that refer to his relations with the provincial parliaments, have greater importance since the archives of the Chancellery of this time have disappeared.
The collection includes an item (AP/154/II/135), entitled "Juifs" (Jews), which contains documents related to the Jews of Portuguese origin established in Guyenne, including three autographed letters signed by Dupré de Saint Maur (1732-91), in charge of an investigation that involved Portuguese Jews and printed documents on divorce in the Jewish religion.

Archival history

The Tocqueville family papers were initially entrusted for classification by the Count of Tocqueville to the Archives départementales de la Manche (Departmental Archives of the Manche) and later to the National Archives, where the inventory of this fonds was written. Even before the production of this inventory, the records had been divided into several sub-fonds, corresponding to the major marriage alliances of the family. The Lamoignon fonds (154 AP II) is one of the five sub-fonds of the Tocqueville family collection. The others are the Tocqueville fonds (154 AP I), the Benozan fonds (154 AP III), the Duchemin fonds (154 AP IV), Lallement de Nantouillet fonds (154 AP V), and another containing miscellany documentation (154 AP VI).

Administrative / Biographical history

The Lamoignon family gave origin to an illustrious line of parliamentarians, originally from the Nivernais region (13th century). The family settled in Donziois in the 14th century and took its name from its region of origin, Amognes. One of the most prominent figures of this family was Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes (1721-94), who succeeded his father at the head of the Cour des aides (Court of Aids) in 1749. He was Secretary of State of the King's Household under the Turgot ministry from July 1775 to May 1776, and minister from April 1787 to August 1788. A man of the Enlightenment and a friend of philosophers, Lamoignon de Malesherbes corresponded with remarkable scholars of his time and became noted as an amateur scientist.
