Scope and content
The Archive of the Bardaji family contains family documents, mostly medieval parchments. The most interesting documents belong to Berenguer de Bardaji, Justicia de Aragon and Lord of Estercuel (fifteenth century). There is abundant documentation related to Estercuel castle and the towns of Obon and Zaidin in their relations and conflicts with their lordship. Likewise, there are documents on rental and exchange of property.
The collection contains the archives, or in some cases significant documents, of the following (BARDAJI,F.1-7): Barony of Estercuel, Baronies of Antillon and Zaidin, Baronies of Oliete, Alcaine and Letux, Lordship of Ariza, Lordship of Navarres, Duchy of Gandia, and Lordship of Obon.
The documents are classified in several series, according to their type:
1) Genealogy, noble titles, and entailed estate (“mayorazgo”).
2) Nobiliary jurisdiction.
3) Estate.
4) Estate administration.
5) Private.
6) Staff.
7) Board of pious works (documents related to charitable works and expenses related to religious worship).
8) Collections.
Concerning Jews, the section Baronies of Oliete, Alcaine y Letux contains a deed of transfer granted by Salomon Constantin of Zaragoza to Juce Abimba, also of Zaragoza, of two financial obligations (“censales”) that he had bought from Berenguer de Bardaji, Lord of Oliete and Letux, together with the town council of Oliete and the Muslim Aljama of Letux (1480). Another deed indicates that Salomon Constantin sold to Ezmel Abendino, also of Zaragoza, the financial obligation (“censal”) that he had bought from Berenguer de Bardaji (1480). There is also preserved the judgment of the lawsuit between Salomon Constantin, from Zaragoza, against Berenguer de Bardaji, Baron of Oliete and Letux, and the town councils of Oliete and Letux, in relation to the financial obligation (“censal”) that he had sold to Ezmel Abendino (1486). From other documents, we know that there were Jewish communities in Oliete and Letux that participated in the sales made by Berenguer de Bardaji (1482, 1488, and 1491). Another document informs us of the sale of a financial obligation (“censal”) made by the “adelantado” (alderman) and the economic managers of the Jewish brotherhood "Malvise Aromim" of Zaragoza, to Maria de Avellaneda, Berenguer de Bardaji’s wife (1484).
The Lordship of Obon section includes a deed of debt by which the town council of Obon acknowledges and compels itself to pay a debt contracted with Jeffuda Albala, from Montalban (1409).

Administrative / Biographical history
The Bardaji family is of Aragonese lineage, which held, among other noble titles, the Barony of Estercuel. The Lordship of the Baronies of Estercuel (Teruel) along with those of the Baronies of Pertusa, Antillon and De los Castillos and places of Oliete, Ubon, Zaydi and Castelflorite, all in lower Aragon, were held by one of the branches of the family begun by Berenguer de Bardaji at the beginning of the 15th century.
