Scope and content
The Casa Fronteira e Alorna collection comprises documentation related to the administration of the House of Fronteira e Alorna and items from the personal library of this Portuguese noble family. It includes documents such as records of donations, commendations, pensions, appointments for offices, royal letters and correspondence to the court, loan deeds, pledges, judgments, certificates, powers of attorney, marriage contracts, deeds and wills, among others. It also includes notes, memoirs, draft opinions on military, political, or private matters, genealogical documentation, historical manuscripts, and other documentation.
This collection contains an opinion sent by the Marquis of Fronteira to King João V of Portugal (1686-1750) on July 25, 1712, mentioning Izac Barbanelli, a Sephardic Jew from Amsterdam, as a critical commercial agent in the Netherlands. Barbanelli was also a creditor of the Portuguese Crown (PT/TT/CFTR-MAS/006/006.8.4).

Administrative / Biographical history
The title of "Marquês de Fronteira" (Marquis of Fronteira) was created by King Pedro II (1648-1706) in 1670. The 1st Marquis of Fronteira was João de Mascarenhas (1633-1681), a member of the Conselho de Estado (Council of State) and Conselho de Guerra (Council of War). He had previously participated in the Restoration Wars that opposed the Portuguese Crown to the Habsburgs between 1640 and 1668.
The 2nd Marquis was Fernando de Mascarenhas (1655-1729), who later became a member of the Conselho de Estado (Council of State) under King João V (1689-1750). He was also President of the Desembargo do Paço (High Court), among other relevant positions. His descendants kept relative relevance in the Portuguese political system until later.
The 6th Marquis was João José Luís Mascarenhas Barreto (1778-1806). He married D. Leonor Benedita de Oyenhausen e Almeida, Countess of Oyenhausen in Austria and 4th Marquise of Alorna. As a result of this marriage, the House of Fronteira took on the representation of the House of the Marquises of Alorna and Counts of Assumar and the titles of Marquises of Távora and Counts of São João da Pesqueira, which the Alornas also represented.
