Scope and content
This fonds comprises documentation produced by the Inquisition of Valencia. It is divided into five main groups, each reflecting different types of documents: 1) Indice de instrucciones, provisiones y cartas acordadas (index of instructions, provisions and letters); 2) Indices de procesos de fe (indexes of inquisitorial trials) (1780-1820); 3) Libros de testificaciones (testimonial books ) (1467-1514); 4) Pleitos fiscales (fiscal lawsuits) (1543-1652); and 5) Procesos de fe (trials).
Among these series, it is possible to find numerous information regarding conversos living in the territory under the jurisdiction of the Inquisition of Valencia.
PARES, the system of the Spanish Archives, provides researchers with extensive documentation, which has already been digitised and made available online.
In most cases, consultation of inquisitorial documents should be complemented with research on other district courts and the Consejo de Inquisicion (Inquisition Council) fonds, which contains documentation produced by the Suprema. This institution had jurisdiction over all inquisitorial courts in Spanish territories.

Archival history
After the extinction of the Inquisition in Spain, most documents were sent to the Archivo General de Simancas. From 1896, the inquisitorial fonds kept in Simancas and Alcalá were sent to the Archivo Historico Nacional, where the Inquisición section was created. This section has been completed by incorporating other series of inquisitorial documents stored in the Biblioteca Nacional de España (National Library of Spain) in 1914.
The fonds of the Inquisition of Valencia were acquired from a "cohetero" (rocket maker) who used the documentation to manufacture cartridges and cartridge cases.

Administrative / Biographical history
The Inquisition was already present in the Kingdom of Aragon in 1232. This medieval court was less active than its early-modern successor but also trialled many people.
After the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478, the first inquisitors arrived in Valencia in December 1481. Although the sources relating to the initial phase are scarce, its activity seems to have been intense since the first years. The court district underwent slight variations during this early stage. Later, it included much of the Kingdom of Valencia, Teruel in Southeastern Aragon and the bishopric of Tortosa in Southern Catalonia.
Between 1554 and 1700, the Inquisition of Valencia judged 4,941 cases. The most persecuted groups were the Moriscos (descendants of Muslims) (3,003 cases) and those charged with heresy (603 cases). As an important port city, Valencia also had large immigrant communities. Thus, several Protestants were trialled there, 252 of whom were recorded. One of the particularities of the Inquisition of Valencia after the mid-16th century is the low number of executions: 97 out of 4941 cases. The previous period had been much bloodier, with at least 754 executions in the 1,997 trials opened before 1530.
