Scope and content

The Manuscripts collection of the Bibliothèque-musée de Carpentras contains a wide variety of documentation, including isolated documents, registers, collections, charters and illustrated documents from the 9th to the 20th century. It also includes illuminated liturgical books, ancient and medieval poetry, chronicles and historical documents.
This collection also contains documents from the Communauté judéo-comtadine (Judeo-Comtadine community), such as accounting books, ritual records and marriage contracts. Some documents are relevant to the history of the Sephardim and the history of Jews in general. Some examples are the following:
48: "Bénédictions ou prières en hébreu", Hebrew blessings or prayers. 12th century.
1399: "Évêché. Mense. Investiture, 1777 à 1783": contains information on a case that opposed Isaac Salon and Sara Lyon against the diocese of Carpentras (fol. 427). July 31, 1783.
1400/1420: "Quaedam instrumenta, pridem separata, nunc collecta et simul juncta, praedia, redditus episcopatus in particulari spectantia, simul praelatorum episcopatus". This collection includes records on cases that involved Jews from Carpentras in the 17th century.
2594: Trial opposing Isaac de Digne from Isle-sur-Sorgue and "Mme de Carichon" de Montpezat. 1759-1763.
2607: Juridical deed from a judge of Carpentras, Joseph Bouteille, in favour of Salamy Crémieu, a Jew resident in the same city. 1751.
2608: "Manuscrits hébraïques", vol. 1: Hebrew manuscripts containing an account book from the late 18th century belonging to Jacob Naquet, a Jewish merchant from Carpentras.
2609: "Manuscrit liturgique de rite juif comtadin": Hebrew liturgical manuscript of a Comtadin Jewish rite. 17th century.
2610: Mahsor for the Feast of Tabernacles, written by Joseph, son of Benjamin de Meyrargues, 1697/1698.

Archival history

The Bibliothèque-musée de Carpentras manuscript collection contains a wide variety of documents of different provenance. Some of the most relevant manuscripts were the "Peiresc papers", acquired by Malachie d'Inguimbert (1683-1757). Another collection of significant importance belonged to the scholar Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637), containing 120 manuscripts on Astronomy, History and Botany.
In the musical section, the manuscript collection includes autograph scores by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Schumann (1810-1856), and Brahms (1833-1897), donated by Jean-Joseph Bonaventure Laurens (1801-1890) in 1888.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Bibliothèque-musée de Carpentras was founded by the bishop of Carpentras, Malachie d'Inguimbert (1683-1757). For reasons of preservation, the Bibliothèque-musée was later moved to the Hôtel-Dieu. The building was a hospital institution until 2002. It was reformed in 2014, and its current facilities were completed in 2017.
