Scope and content

The Archief van Teixeira de Mattos comprises diverse documents accumulated by the Teixeira de Mattos family and related families. It includes, for instance, letters, marriage contracts, property records, and many others. The collection is organised into four series: 1) Genealogieën (Genealogies); 2) Stukken betreffende afzonderlijke takken (Records on individual branches); 3) Stukken waarvan het verband met het archief niet is aangetoond (Records which have not been proved linked to the archive); and 4) Documentatie (Documentation).
The second series is divided into six subseries: three related to different families — the Teixeira de Mattos, the Chaves, and the Levi Ximenes —; one with documentation concerning Elisabeth Abigael Labatt (1819-1908), married to Benjamin Teixeira Salvador (1817-1874); another on the management of the legacies of the Pereira family, with whom the Teixeira de Mattos were related; and the last subseries with miscellaneous items. The first three subseries include records related to some members of the said families that were also important figures of the Sephardic community of Amsterdam. They are the following:
- Manuel Teixeira, alias Isaac Senior Teixeira (1631-1705): deed of a privilege granted by King Frederick III of Denmark for goods delivered by Manuel Teixeira to Heinrich Möller, 1654 (8); illuminated ketubah between him and Esther Gomez de Mesquita, signed in Hamburg in 1671 (9); receipt for Francisco Lopes Suasso (alias Abraham Israel Suasso) for the restitution of the dowry after the death of Judith Teixeira, with a copy of the receipt of the dowry in 1682 (10).
- Benjamin Teixeira (1678-1744), Manuel Teixeira's son: Portuguese memorandum concerning jewels from the estate of his father-in-law Samuel Teixeira, 1717 (11).
- Joseph de Jacob Teixeira de Mattos (1698-1775) and his children Jacob (1724-1780), Sara (1728-1794) and Ribca (1730-1794): several documents including extracts from the translation of Joseph de Jacob's will in 1732 (16); the ketubah of Jacob de Joseph Teixeira de Mattos and Sara Levy Ximenes in Amsterdam, May 19, 1748 (17); a Portuguese journal of journey through Gederland undertaken by Sara Levy Ximenes, Ribca de David Hisquiau Levy Ximenes, Sara Capadose, and Judith de Jacob Teixeira de Mattos, 1786 (33); documents from Jacob Teixeira de Mattos as guardian of Mozes de David Hisquiau Pereira concerning his departure to St Eustatius, 1778 (61).
- Judit Teixeira de Mattos (1750-1813), Jacob de Joseph Teixeira de Mattos's daughter: bills and receipts for salaries, taxes, gifts, etc. (74-83); a current account with her brother Joseph Haim de Jacob Teixeira de Mattos, 1795-1813 (84); draft overview of Judith's fortune, ca. 1813 (85); and lists of distributions made to the members of the Portuguese Jewish congregation of Amsterdam on account of her will (86).
- Joseph Haim de Jacob Teixeira de Mattos (1754-1820), his wife Sara de Chaves (1752-1803), their children Jacob (1783-1808), Isaac (1784-1865) and Samuel (1791-1865), and their son-in-law David Franco Mendes (1779-1848), married to Rachel de Joseph Teixeira de Mattos (1782-1824): several documents, including records of the company Teixeira, Mendes da Costa & Co., 1786-1810 (87-88); Joseph Haim de Jacob Teixeira de Mattos' will, 1814 (106), and the memories he left to his children containing guidelines on the execution of his will and his funeral, 1814-1816 (108).
- Joseph Hisquiau de Chaves (1725-1777) and his wife Sara Gomes Serra (1728-1803): various documents, including their ketubah in London, 1747 (238); Joseph's cash book in London and Amsterdam concerning securities and bonds from the estates of Joseph Henriques, Salomon de Mozes Pereira and Mozes de Salomon Pereira, 1770-1774 (241); Sara's codicil written in London, in which she discusses a bequest to the brothers and sisters Esther, Mozes, Rebecca, David and Rachel Nunes Carvalho, 1770 (245); her inventory drawn up after she was placed under guardianship, 1779 (247), and receipts and other documents for her curators, 1778-1804 (248-258).
- Moses de Chaves (1692-1759): judicial appointment of Moses de Chaves as the administrator of the estate of his daughter Ribca de Chaves for his grandson Joseph de Abraham Capadose, 1755 (271); judicial verification and registration of the codicillary appointment by Moses de Chaves of Isaac and Jacob de Mozes de Chaves as executors of his will, 1759-1760 (272); and receipts of payments of salaries (273-274).
- Rachel Levy Ximenes, wife of David Hisquiau Israel Pereira: several documents concerning her estate, including an extract from the registers of the Amsterdam Weeskamer (Orphan Chamber) regarding the payment of her share in the estate of her uncle Abraham Levy Ximenes, 1749-1750 (278).
- Abraham Nunes Henriques: documents concerning bonds from his estate, 1790 (281).
The subseries concerning the legacies of the Pereira family includes wills, inventories of estates, and records of trusts related to the legacies of Moses (alias) Pereira (317-335), Abraham (Alessandro) de Moses Pereira (336-344), and Abraham Pereira (291-316).
Besides the aforementioned documents, there are others of high interest scattered throughout this collection. For this reason, the online catalogue of the collection should be consulted. In addition, digital copies of various materials are available online.
In the Amsterdam City Archives, there are other collections related to the Teixeira family that should be consulted as well.

Archival history

The Teixeira de Mattos family archive was donated to the Amsterdam City Archives in 1974 by Jonkheer E. V. E. Teixeira de Mattos from Monte Carlo. Three full boxes were delivered to the City Archives by the donor's nephew. The first descriptions of the documents were made by W. Chr. Pieterse, who was proficient in Portuguese and, for this reason, could read the documentation in this language. Partly due to the fact that the descriptions on sheets had disappeared, disclosure was delayed. In 1985, when a new depository wing was built, the sheets appeared in the library warehouse, as a result of moving several files. The inventory was taken up again in 1992 by Wim Heijnen and Sandra Langereis, students of Archival Science at the University of Amsterdam. Then, the archive was again described, this time in more detail, followed by a global arrangement. This process, too, was discontinued; however, the archive was made available to researchers via the new files. In 2011, the editing was completed, this time by employees of the City Archives.

Administrative / Biographical history

The Teixeira family was a Portuguese New Christian family that attained nobility and whose various branches — Teixeira d'Andrade, Teixeira de Sampayo, Teixeira de Mattos — extended to diverse destinations of the Western Sephardic Diaspora, such as Hamburg, London, Vienna, and Venice.
It was the case of Diogo Teixeira Sampayo, alias Abraham Senior Teixeira, who left Portugal for Antwerp in 1643. After a brief time in this city, he moved to Hamburg. In 1647 or 1648, Diogo and his wife adhered publicly to Judaism, and he and his two sons were circumcised. In Hamburg, Diogo succeeded in his businesses and resided in a princely house, where Queen Christina of Sweeden used to be hosted during her visits to the city. He became a leading figure in the Jewish community in Hamburg, where he died on January 6, 1666. Diogo's son Manuel Teixeira de Sampayo, alias Isaac Hayyim Senior Teixeira, followed his father's steps and became the financial agent and resident minister of Queen Christina of Sweden. He was the first member of the Teixeira family to settle in Amsterdam around 1698. In 1699, he was also elected "parnas" (president) of the Talmud Torah congregation.
Manuel Teixeira de Sampayo married three times and had five sons. From his first marriage to Rachel Teixeira de Sampayo, Diogo Teixeira de Mattos, alias Abraham de Mattos (1650-1701) was born. Samuel Senior Teixeira (1656-1717) and Isaac Teixeira De Mattos (1669-1700) were born from Manuel's second marriage to Rachel Nunes Henriques. Manuel's youngest sons, from his third marriage to Ester Gomes de Mesquita, were David Teixeira (1676-1708), the only one who added the surname d'Andrade to his family name, and Benjamin Teixeira (1678-1744), who married his niece Ribca, daughter of his half-brother Samuel Senior Teixeira.
Jacob Teixeira de Mattos (1670-1708), son of Diogo Teixeira de Mattos, moved to London and gave rise to a branch of the family settled in this city. His son Joseph Teixeira de Mattos (1699-1775) married Judith (1703-1732), Abraham Haim Nunes Henriques's daughter, in London on July 7, 1723 (the ketubah is part of this collection). The couple ended up moving to Amsterdam, where their oldest son, Jacob (1724-1780), was born. He married Sara Levy Ximenes, daughter of Isaac Hisquiau Levy Ximenes, but an orphan at the time of the union on April 19, 1748. The couple lived on the (Nieuwe) Herengracht, and Jacob assumed the guardianship of the children of his sister-in-law Rachel Levy Ximenes and David Hisquiau Pereira. This is probably why the documentation related to the legacies of the Pereira family is also part of the Teixeira de Mattos family collection.
Jacob and Sarah were parents of Judit Teixeira de Mattos (1750-1813), Joseph Haim Teixeira de Mattos (1754-1820) and Isaac de Teixeira Nunes (1757-1804).
On March 5, 1779, Joseph Haim Teixeira de Mattos married Sara de Chaves (1752-1803), daughter of Joseph Hisquiau de Chaves. He formed a company with Samuel Mendes da Costa, the Teixeira, Mendes da Costa & Co., whose some documentation can be found in this collection. Joseph and Sara were the parents of Rachel (1782-1824), Jacob (1783-1808), Isaac (1784-1865) and Samuel (1791-1865).
Samuel de Joseph Haim Teixeira de Mattos married Lea, daughter of Isaac de Abraham Mendes and Rachel de David aCohen, on October 30, 1827. This couple gave rise to the branch of the family that preserved the Teixeira de Mattos collection. Their son Abraham Louis Teixeira de Mattos (1839-1908) was a banker and ended up awarded the honorific title "Jonkheer", inherited by his descendants. Thus, his daughter Carolina Anna (1868-1940), a miniature painter, also had the title of "Jonkvrouw", which she passed to her son Eugene Victor Edouard (E.V.E.) Teixeira de Mattos (1899-1982). E.V.E Teixeira de Mattos was Netherlands Consul in New York and, in 1974, donated his family collection to the City Archives.

System of arrangement

The collection is divided into four series, each one composed of several subseries. The second series (Stukken betreffende afzonderlijke takken - Records on individual branches) is arranged based on genealogy. The first part concerns the Teixeira de Mattos family and the second part concerns the related families. For each family member, the archive has tried to keep together the documents originating from the family as a whole. Thus the documents drawn up by the wife and children are grouped as much as possible with the male head of the family, distinguishing between his documents and those of his children. The classification makes the family relationships visible. For documents originating from other relatives who do not belong to the nuclear family, the family relationship has been noted at the headings.
In each series and subseries, records are tendentially arranged by chronological order.
