Scope and content

The I. S. Révah fonds comprises documentation related to historical and genealogical research carried out by the historian Israel Salvator Révah. The collection is organised by subjects and types of documents. It contains personal documentation of Révah, research notes, and documents. Sephardic history and culture were Révah's areas of expertise. Therefore, this fonds contains numerous documents and research materials regarding the Sephardim in the Early Modern period. Some examples are the following:
Judéo-Espagnol IV: contains 16th-century biblical, liturgical, and devotional texts, as well as transcriptions of documents and lexicographical notes.
Inquisition I: inventory of documents of the Portuguese Inquisition archives kept at the Arquivo Nacional da Torre do Tombo (National Archive of Torre do Tombo) in Lisbon, including a survey of documents related to Jews, Judaism, and New Christians. Also contains references to a manuscript of the Biblioteca da Ajuda (Library of the Ajuda Palace).
Inquisition II: inventory of documents of the Spanish Inquisition kept at the Archivo Histórico Nacional (National Historical Archive) in Madrid, including a survey of documents related to Jews, Judaism, and New Christians.
Inquisition III: paper of the conference "Juifs et jésuites contre l'Inquisition" (Jews and Jesuits against the Inquisition) in the French Institute of Lisbon in 1954-1955, with transcriptions of documents and photographic reproductions. It contains a file entitled "L'Inquisition à Goa et au Brésil" (The Inquisition in Goa and Brazil), with an index of individuals sentenced by the Portuguese Inquisition.
Marranes en France III: text of the conference "Les Portugais en France au XVIIe siècle: Les nouveaux-chrétiens de Rouen" (The Portuguese in France in the 17th century: The New Christians of Rouen) in the French Institute of Lisbon in 1953-1954, unpublished. It contains transcriptions of documents and photographic reproductions.
Juifs portugais à Amsterdam I: contains documents on Portuguese Jewish families in Amsterdam, such as the Abravanel, Belmonte, Franco, Pereira, Salom de Paz, Senior Coronel, Spinoza, Tirado, Touro and Yesurun.
Juifs portugais à Amsterdam II: annotations on documents from collections of the Amsterdam Municipal Archives, Ets Haim Library, Archives of the Kingdom of Belgium in Brussels, and the Municipal Archives of Antwerp.
Juifs portugais à Amsterdam III: abstracts of Amsterdam notarial acts by E. M. Koen for the Studia Rosenthaliana journal, with an onomastic index of documents on the Portuguese in Amsterdam in 1595-1604. It includes notarial acts concerning the Spinoza family, and a photographic reproduction of Isaac Aboab's "Livro e nota de ydades" (literally "Book and account of ages", a genealogical narration of his family).
Juifs portugais à Amsterdam IV and V: photographic reproductions from the Portuguese Jewish Community collection at the Amsterdam Municipal Archives: "Dotar A-C"; "Jornal da imposta"; "Termos da imposta 1622-1639" and "Termos de Beth-Israel".
Uriel da Costa III: documentation on the paternal family of Uriel da Costa, including notarial documents from the Arquivo Distrital do Porto (Porto District Archive) and the Arquivo Distrital de Braga (Braga District Archive).
Uriel da Costa IV: documentation on the maternal family of Uriel da Costa and other New Christian families from the northwest of Portugal, such as the Bemtalhado and the families of Duarte Fernandes and Manuel Francisco and Leonor de Pina. It also includes copies of inquisitorial records of 1541-1548 regarding the lexicographer Jerónimo Cardoso and the messianic movement around Mestre Graviel and the shoemaker Luís Dias.
Uriel da Costa V: reproduction of the Portuguese Inquisition trials of Lopo Nunes, Maria da Costa, Leonor da Pina, and Bento da Costa Brandão.
Uriel da Costa VI: copies of trials of the Portuguese Inquisition against New Christians from Porto and Aveiro during the period 1590-1625.
Rupture spinozienne IV: photographic reproduction of four manuscripts of Isaac Oróbio de Castro's letter against Juan de Prado.
Familles marranes I: records on New Christian families of Lisbon, namely the families of Fernão Álvares Melo, Heitor Mendes, o rico, and Elias Montalto. It also contains genealogies of some of them.
Familles marranes II: documentation on the playwright António José da Silva, including notes and transcriptions of documents. It also contains the photographic reproduction of his trial and that of Catarina Soares Brandão.
Familles marranes III: contains documentation on António Nunes Ribeiro Sanches.
Maïmonide en espagnol II: contains photographic reproductions of Alfonso de la Torre's "La Visión Delectable", whose originals are held by the National Library of Madrid (6638), the National Library of Lisbon (3337), and the Library of El Escorial (H.III.5 and O.II.21). Microfilms: copies of numerous documents from Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese and Dutch archives.
Divers I: includes copies of documents of denunciations to the Inquisition against Portuguese Jews in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Hamburg, Pernambuco, Ferrara, and Venice. It also contains copies of inquisitorial trials against Francisco de Santo António, alias Abraham Reuben, a Jew from Fez living in Madrid (Archivo Historico Nacional, Inq., leg. 134, exp. 18).

Archival history

Founded in Paris in 1860 to promote human rights and defend the Jewish people, the Alliance Israélite Universelle has evolved over the years into an important educational institution.
Many other institutions and private individuals have entrusted the Alliance with their archives, thus making them available for consultation by students and researchers. Similarly, various personalities and their families have donated their personal archives, including Paul Bauer, Jean Ellissen, Elian Finbert, Henri Hertz, Kruger, Bernard Lazare, Jacques Lazarus, Sarah Leibovici, Edmond Maurice Lévy, Bernard Mélamède, Pierre Mendès France, Salomon Grumbach, Rachel Minc, Louis Oungre and Isidore Simon.
The I. S. Révah collection was donated by Jean-François Révah to the Archives of the Alliance Israélite Universelle in 2007.

Administrative / Biographical history

Israel Salvator Révah (1917-1973), the son of a Sephardic family from Salonika, was a professor of Hispanic languages and literature at the École Pratique des Hautes Études and, since 1966, at the Collège de France. In addition to his work in linguistics and literary history, he distinguished himself as a specialist in the Judeo-Spanish language, the Iberian conversos and the Judeo-Portuguese communities.
Israel Salvator Révah died at the age of 55, leaving a large part of his extensive documentation and studies on Sephardic Jews unpublished.
